Is it better for marriages?

I've seen this passage used to justify some of the most atrocious abuse. I'm not saying that this is how it is for everyone (so don't jump all over me for my answer), but this is my experience.

The area I grew up had quite a few Christian Fundamentalist groups. One group used this passage to justify treating their wifes as chattel to do with what they wanted. My best friend grew up in such a household. One event I remember clearly was seeing her mom with swollen, black & blue, and cuts on her face. She looked like she was in a head on collision; I asked my friend what happened. "She was bad" was the response; apparently she had overcooked the turkey. It was not just this family; similar things happened in most of those families. Their church condoned it.

Submit (Definition): yield to the control of another
I do not submit to my husband, nor does he submit to me. We have a partnership, we consider each other when making decisions. It's the cooperation, compromise, and commitment that makes a marriage. If you want something to submit to you, get a dog not a spouse.

God first, then husband, then family.submit yourself in love and in respect. Then you read what it says for the husband too, husbands, treat your wives just as Christ treats the church, It works both ways, love is a 2-way not a 1-way, marriage is a 2-way and not a 1-way..you both work at it...

The bible says for wives to submit to their husbands.

I think the question should be "Should women submit to their husbands as commanded by the Bible?"

This book was written by men living in a patriarchial misogynistic society. Women were considered the source of sin and evil. They were not understood and were feared. They were seen as weaker and less intelligent. They were actually valued at 1/2 the value of men if they were killed.

In any event, the attitudes in this book are vile and outdated. Believe them if you wish, but they are a major source of hatred and intolerance in the world, and unapologetically so.

The Bible also says for husbands to submit to their wives.

It simply means to put your mate before yourself.

In marriage, you belong to each other. But submission means anything approved by God. If it's out of line, it's also a sin.
If he sends you grocery shopping, you don't go to the movies.
If he asks you to buy land, you don't buy a car.
Get the point?
He should treat you with deep respect, as Sara did with Abraham calling him Lord.

I am not Christian but I consider my husband in everything I do, how it will effect him, if it will benefit us as a couple...that is the only man who gets this consideration...don't know if that would qualify as 'submitting', I doubt it...

and you forgot, "husbands, treat your wives just as Christ treats the church"
marriage is a partnership, it goes both ways. A lot of people "miss" that second part of that statement

hahahahaha. It could be the law and I wouldn't submit to anyone. Marriage is about compromise not submission.

It depends on how/what you submit.
