Bart: Is this the right room for an argument?

Francis: I've told you once.

Bart: No you haven't.

Francis: Yes I have.

Bart: When?

Francis: Just now!

Bart: No you didn't.

Francis: Yes I did!

Bart: Didn't.

Francis: Did.

Bart: Didn't.

Francis: I'm telling you I did!

Bart: You did not!

Francis: I'm sorry, is this a five minute argument, or the full half-hour?

Bart: Oh, just a five minute one.

Francis: Fine. (makes a note of it; Bart sits at his desk and puts his feet up) Thank you. Anyway I did.

Bart: You most certainly did not.

Francis: Now, let's get one thing quite clear... I most definitely told you!

Bart: You did not.

Francis: Yes I did.

Bart: You did not.

Francis: Yes I did.

Bart: Didn't.

Francis: Yes I did.

Bart: Didn't.

Francis: Yes I did!!

Bart: Look this isn't an argument.

Francis: Yes it is.

Bart: No it isn't, it's just contradiction.

Francis: No it isn't.

Bart: Yes it is.

Francis: It is not.

Bart: It is. You just contradicted me.

Francis: No I didn't.

Bart: Ooh, you did!

Francis: No, no, no, no, no.

Bart: You did, just then.

Francis: No, nonsense!

Bart: Oh, look this is futile.

Francis: No it isn't.

Bart: I came here for a good argument.

Francis: No you didn't, you came here for an argument.

Bart: Well, an argument's not the same as contradiction.

Francis: It can be.

Bart: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a definite proposition.

Francis: No it isn't.

Bart: Yes it is. It isn't just contradiction.

Francis: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.

Bart: But it isn't just saying "No it isn't".

Francis: Yes it is.

Bart: No it isn't, an argument is an intellectual process... contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says.

Francis: No it isn't.

Bart: Yes it is.

Francis: Not at all.

Bart: Now look!

Francis:(pressing the bell on his desk) Thank you, good morning.

Bart: What?

Francis: That's it. Good morning.

Bart: But I was just getting interested.

Francis: Sorry the five minutes is up.

Bart: That was never five minutes just now!

Francis: I'm afraid it was.

Bart: No it wasn't.

Francis: I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to argue any more.

Bart: What!?

Francis: If you want me to go on arguing, you'll have to submit a Project Agreement

Bart: But that was never five minutes just now... oh come on! (Francis looks round as though Bart was not there) This is ridiculous.

Francis: I'm very sorry, but I told you I'm not allowed to argue unless it’s in writing.

Bart: Oh. All right. (sits and types) There you are.

Francis: Thank you.

Bart: Well?

Francis: Well what?

Bart: That was never five minutes just now.

Francis: I told you I'm not allowed to argue unless you've signed a Project Agreement.

Bart: I just did.

Francis: No you didn't.

Bart: I did! I did! I did!

Francis: No you didn't.

Bart: Look I don't want to argue about that.

Francis: Well I'm very sorry but you didn't sign the agreement.

Bart: Aha! Well if I didn't sign the agreement, why are you arguing... got you!

Francis: No you haven't.

Bart: Yes I have... if you're arguing I must have signed.

Francis: Not necessarily. I could be arguing in my spare time.

Bart: I've had enough of this.

Francis: No you haven't.
