If it is just one side, it sounds like a bite. Is the area warm to the touch? If so, probably a spider.
Either way, you want to see a doc ASAP.

If the side of the face that swelled up was towards You it could be he is allergic to somethig on You, like makeup, or
HAIR SPRAY, You didnt beat him up in the middle of the night did you?

My gut reaction is to the one-sided 'ness' of this. It might be an insect bite' but could also be an allergic reaction.
Trouble breathing, redness? He should see a doc.

If there is no pain it may not be insect bite. It could be happened in so many causes : due to kidney , urinal troubles, anemic condition, it may be MUMPS. Immediately medical check up is required.

you have to take him to the medical doctor as soon as possible. It's obvious something has happened in the middle of the night. Don't panic as I'm sure it's something the doctors can take care of.

Probably an allergic reaction to something. Could be chemical, could be that something bit him.
You'll want to take him to the doctor.

hardly noticable but have a close look and see if there are any unusual tiny marks around his face or neck...
