During lunch, I brought up this matter to my Dad (retired banker). His opinion was in order to thrive and keep up the pace of our growing nation, one would have to learn & accept simpified Chinese. As for me, one whom was not given the opportunity to continue Chinese studies at the age of 9, with limited literacy, was sadden & bothered.

Therefore, I've posted this question to see what you guys thought.

I signed the petition long before this question was posted. I am a Chinese myself and I belive Traditional Chinese should still be use in the UN. I think Traditional Chinese is like art, when you read Traditional Chinese it is as if you are looking at a picture.

Traditional Chinese is part of history and it will be a crime to destory what is our past.

No! It's a tactic of the United Nations primarily aimed against Taiwan, because Taiwan has been actively promoting the Traditional Chinese script.
An acceptance of the Simplified Script translates to an acceptance of the imprisonment of about two billion Chinese people in the Communist-governed mainland.

Sigh... some people are just too eager to make life goes faster and creat more confusion in the name of progress.
As lazy as I am, I would not want the traditional writings to be abolished. And the people that thinks using simplified writings will save time have another thing coming.
In order to use less characters and in the simplied form, one has to be MORE proficient with the langauge itself in order to achieve the same understanding.
I wonder if those petitioners really thought about that ?
Besides, what about all the old paintings with poems and literatures ? and the various caligraphies ?
To use the simplied writings will completely changed the outlook and meaning of some of these historical collections. I myself just absolutely HATE the simplified form of my own name in writing.
Last but not least, tattoos in simplified writings looks like kindergarden work compared to the old fashion traditonal formats.

I signed the petition, NO... NO forever!!!! Besides, I only know how to type traditional Chinese with my computer!

Agree with THEGURU. If I had kids, I would teach them traditional Chinese as basic. No short cut! simpified Chinese to me is just like speedwriting in English! or.. just a little bit better than - LOL.. lmao... something like that!

By making official documents in simplified Chinese it would make it easier for both the ordinary people and those of other countries to understand the documents and could save time and confusion. However, I don't think that by changing official documents from traditional Chinese means that the form of writing will dissapear.

Yes to abolishment of Traditional Chinese if it's good and easier for the world to learn and love simplified Chinese language.

Who cares about the UN. What matters is preserving the culture. If noone learned the traditional characters then who would be able to read the old scrolls and art calligraphy...
Actually I'm a long way from even reading a newspaper.

哈哈哈

I believe language, just like everything, evolves with time. Even if you say NO now, given time, whatever that we are using now will become obsolete in the next few centuries, just like many other languages. What we should do now is to preserve the knowledge, like ensure all the written texts are documented well enough for our future generations.
