Darkness to the armpit (axilla) and neck regions in someone who is overweight is usually due to the condition ACANTHOSIS NIGRICANS. In this condition the skin becomes dark and thick. There are other conditions that lead to skin discoloration which must be excluded, for example, Diabetes Mellitus, and other internal medical illnesses.

The most common explanation for dark neck and armpits is Acanthosis Nigricans which is due to OBESITY, with increasing weight and storage of fat. There is increasing INSULIN resistance in the skin, resulting in the increased deposition of pigment to special areas.

Treatment - first and foremost, requires weight reduction. Even though there are creams available which help, the condition will recur. Creams used for this include the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids, example Glycolic Acid preparations which are sometimes available over the counter. Stronger preparations must be prescribed by a doctor. Glycolic Acid can be a bit irritating to the underarm areas. Other agents include the Tropical Retinoids, example Retin-A. Once again, this product can be irritating and should be used in low concentrations.

However, weight reduction is the KEY. With weight reduction in Acanthosis Nigricans, there can be lightening of the darkened skin significantly, over several months, even without other treatment.
