Concert tickets!!!
A signed photo of his fav musician or actor?
A nice wallet? Or a snazzy watch with an engraving from you on the back?
Does he wear a chain around his neck? You could get him some sort of pendant to go on it, like a chinese symbol. I got hubby one of those, a courage one, he loves it.
My sister got her hubby a new set of golf clubs for theirs.

The traditional gifts for a first anniversary are paper and clocks. Not sure if either sounds good, but I had a travel alarm engraved for my husband... since he was leaving for a research trip the week after our anniversary.
You could do alot with paper... books, event tickets, engraved stationary, autographed baseball cards. Plenty of opportunity to do something special.

Here's something creative that will be appreciated and you will have fun doing:
Make up a crossword puzzle and have all the hints be personal inside moments and jokes that only you two would know about. Put it on a poster board and add some clipart and some pictures to it!
The crossword puzzle could be time consuming and a bit frustrating ... you could do the same idea with a WORDSEARCH or WORDFIND puzzle.
Put your computer skills to work! Use Excel, get clipart from Yahoo Images Search, copy them, and reformat them, use a gluestick to put on posterboard.
Use graph paper, and pictures from magazines if you are not as good on the computer, and it will give it a homemade feeling.

I am married to a huge sports fan and I wanted to go with the whole first year, paper theme - so I bought these incredible tickets to a baseball game at home and another pair of tickets to an away game (an excuse for us to go away for a weekend). I also got him a subscription to his favorite sports magazine.
He was really excited about the tickets and its something to do together. Plus, we have been wanting to get away for the weekend and I gave him the perfect excuse to leave work for a long weekend.
Congratulations! Remember he'll love anything you do.

Traditional 1st anniversary gift is paper. Maybe a book, a painting, sexy photos of you, write him a love letter. Hope this gives you some helpful idea.
Happy Anniversary!!!

This may sound strange, but I went on ebay and found a Playboy from the month and year he was born. We are having it framed and preserved. He loved the idea of it, and could not believe how cool his wife is!
