I have two new male dachsund puppies. They are both 6 weeks and old and are littermates. I was wondering at what age I could get them neutered? Cost? and whether or not it's beneficial for anything besides not reproducing. Thanks

Puppies can be neutered when they are 6 - 8 weeks old as long as they weight at least two pounds. This is called early-age, or pediatric, neutering and is favored by animal shelters. Puppies are more commonly neutered between 4 - 6 months of age. The cost varies depending on where you live, the type of neutering you choose, weight of the pup, and who performs the surgery. There are low-cost and free neuter clinics in addition to your regular veterinarian. Prices can range from $10 - $90. Neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. It can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult or expensive to treat. Neutering eliminates the possibility of testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease. Neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions. Intact (not neutered) dogs often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been neutered. It can make dogs less likely to bite and less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away, or get into fights.

Well, I am not too sure about Dachsunds because I do German Shepherds, but I will not neuter a male till he is a yr because they need the testatrone to get the full male look. Now the law states that it has to be done at 6 months. Now the benefits, alot, especially with a breed like dashunds that are known to be aggressive, neutering can help to reduce that issue. And it will also help with dominace issues, besides the whole, males will mark everywhere, even in your house, which I have not yet seen happen. I have two males, one that is 4 yrs old and one that is 6 months. The 4 yr old still marks everywhere outside. So there goes that theroy. And as far as the domantes issues and aggressive behavior, that demends on how good of a dog handler you are.

Neutering can be done as young as 8 weeks, however most vets don't do pediatric spay/neuters. The average age is 6 months. As for cost depending on where you live and weight at time of neuter it can be anywhere from $100 on up.

It is benefitial for a lot more then simply reproduction. Neutering prevents testicular & prostrate cancers. It reduces the risk of prostrate infections and it pretty much eliminates anal fistulas. It also prevents some very unwanted hormone driven behaviors.

Vets here in Australia normally recommend to have them neutered at approx 6months. Males cost approx $130. The benefits of desexing them at a younger age is that they probably won't cock the leg and they wont have the urge to escape when they smell an in season B*itch. Also they are at less risk of getting testicular cancer.

6 months.

And cost goes on the weight of the dog.. So you'd have to ask.

And yes apparently it calms them down... we've just had our 10 month old Rottie neutered and apparently it takes about 2 months for you to notice the difference in behavior! But you should.

I have a mini dachshund and I got him neutered at 6 months old. My vet said to wait until he finished his shots and got his rabies shot which was at 6 months old.

I think that was just in time because around that time he started to become interested in humping things! He didn't do it much but once or twice on the husband's leg was enough to convince us to take him in!

Our baby wasn't in much pain and tolerated the surgery quite well. It was about $200 including the meds. and it helped calm him down. (He still has lots of energy mind you!). It also helped us in training him and in the potty training because he seemed to focus a little better.

Hope this helps and that you enjoy your little babies...take lots of pictures now...they get big fast!

6 weeks is to young, they must have they're full round of shots before the vet will preform the surgery.. the cost depends your local ASPCA will do it for 75 and vets charge anywhere from 200 too 300.. it is good for them though.. many vets agree that dogs that are neutered are less likely to suffer from cancers ..

Get it done at roughly 6 months, the cost varies from one area of the country to another and from vet to vet. Aside from keeping your dogs from making puppies, there are health benefits (no risk of testicular cancer) and it will help them behaviorally- they will be less likely to be aggressive and easier to train. They also may have less of a tendency to pee or 'mark' everything.
