I have performed this task numerous times before. But recently I reinstalled Windows and since then, when I try converting AVI to MPEG, the resulting file just has white noise (hissing and crackling) throughout instead of the soundtrack. Anyone know why? Thanks

Dont get a codecs, just download VLC player that'll play AVI Files.

If u Try to play your movies through WMP or WINAMP, U will be destined to get a codec to play the files. VLC is just the best for movies of any format.

Does the file your trying to convert play in Windows Media Player if not winavi wont convert it properly or at all. Therefore install http://www.realalternative.com this will allow you to play 99.99% of files in wmp and therefore convert it to your satisfaction. Hope this works for you. It did me.
