They were expecting someone to relieve them from the oppressive 'yolk;' of the Roman rulership and taxation system.
Not someone who preached love and ' turn the other cheek'.
After three and a half years of preaching, the sum result of Jesus' efforts amounted to only 120 persons. The ones described as being in the upper room when touched by the Holy Spirit that showed as tongues of flame from the tops of their heads.
(Acts 2:3-4) And tongues as if of fire became visible to them and were distributed about, and one sat upon each one of them, 4 and they all became filled with holy spirit and started to speak with different tongues, just as the spirit was granting them to make utterance.

Most of them rejected Jesus because He came as someone to die and this was not what the Jews expected. The Jews expected the Messiah to come as a King to deliver them from their oppressors. Anyway, they will recognize Him when He comes again a second time (soon).

No, i don't agree! you're making Jews look blood-thirsty and savage. What you have quoted became into written thousands of years in the past and there is not extra blood atonement! i'm Jewish, became into born Jewish, and could die Jewish and that i reject the Messiah. you're very boastful to inform somebody else what they're and what they at the instant are not. i'm hoping you get the help you choose quickly. To buff: you're patently new right here or you will understand approximately David. it is appropriate to the fiftieth positioned up he's made interior an identical vein approximately how "you at the instant are not Jewish till you compromise for Messiah, blah, blah, blah". How would you like it if I published something on a daily basis approximately how Christians at the instant are not likely Christians in the event that they don't believe an identical issues I do? How would you experience if I reported to you "I say you at the instant are not Christian" based basically on my own ideals. the place is the affection? it is not in this positioned up!

I think collectivecow gave a good answer. However let me add one point: there are ****no**** Jews who believe that Jesus was the messiah. No Jew that I know considers Jews for Jesus to be Jewish--they are the only ones who consider themselves as such. Period, end of sentence.

Yeah how come, he couldn't have cut a very convincing Messiah figure for those on the ground at the time and place now could he? They were not taken in by the later hype because they knew the truth.

it's important to know that not ALL jews rejected Jesus. after all, every writer of the bible (all of it) was a jew, except for maybe luke, and that's only a theory.
the ones that did reject Him (the pharisees and saducees) were the jewish authority of the time. they rejected Jesus for reasons of blasphemy: He told them the truth, that he was (and still is) the Son of God, meaning that He was (and still is) equal with God. they also rejected Jesus because He exposed their hypocrisy: He repeatedly pointed out that they were so concerned with punishing sinners that they had forgotten about mercy. He pointed out that they would do things like pray loudly in public, and draw attention to themselves when they given to the poor, or distort their faces while they fasted, so everyone could see how ''righteous'' they were. but most of all, they rejected Him so that He could be tortured to death, fulfilling old testament prophecy, as atonement for our sins.

There are groups that exist that are Jewish and believe in Jesus ( http://www.jewsforjesus.org )
To answer your question however; I found a very good informational resource that can explain why Judaism does not except Jesus as a Messiah.
I will cite the article below and provide some links with more information:
1) Jesus did not fullfill the Messianic Prophecies:
What is the Messiah supposed to accomplish?
The Bible says that he will:
- Build the Third Temple (Ezekiel 37:26-28)
- Gather all Jews back to the Land of Israel (Isaiah 43:5-6).
- Usher in an era of world peace and end all hatred, oppression, suffering and disease.
As it says: "Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall man learn war anymore." (Isaiah 2:4)
- Spread universal knowledge of the God of Israel, which will unite humanity as one.
The historical fact is that Jesus fulfilled none of these messianic prophecies.
Christians counter that Jesus will fulfill these in the Second Coming, but Jewish sources show that the Messiah will fulfill the prophecies outright, and no concept of a second coming exists.
2) Jesus did not embody the personal qualifications of the Messiah
- Descendent of David
According to Jewish sources, the Messiah will be born of human parents and possess normal physical attributes like other people.
He will not be a demi-god, nor will he possess supernatural qualities.
The Messiah must be descended on his father's side from King David (see Genesis 49:10 and Isaiah 11:1).
According to the Christian claim that Jesus was the product of a virgin birth, he had no father -- and thus could not have possibly fulfilled the messianic requirement of being descended on his father's side from King David.
- Torah Observance
- The Messiah will lead the Jewish people to full Torah observance.
The Torah states that all commandments remain binding forever and anyone coming to change the Torah is immediately identified as a false prophet. (Deut. 13:1-4)
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus contradicts the Torah and states that its commandments are no longer applicable. (see John 1:45 and 9:16, Acts 3:22 and 7:37)
3) Mistranslation
- Biblical verses can only be understood by studying the original Hebrew text -- which reveals many discrepancies in the Christian translation.
A. VIRGIN BIRTH
The Christian idea of a virgin birth is derived from the verse in Isaiah 7:14 describing an "alma" as giving birth. The word "alma" has always meant a young woman, but Christian theologians came centuries later and translated it as "virgin." This accords Jesus' birth with the first century pagan idea of mortals being impregnated by gods.
B. CRUCIFIXION
The verse in Psalms 22:17 reads: "Like a lion, they are at my hands and feet." The Hebrew word ki-ari (like a lion) is grammatically similar to the word "gouged." Thus Christianity reads the verse as a reference to crucifixion: "They pierced my hands and feet."
C. SUFFERING SERVANT
Christianity claims that Isaiah chapter 53 refers to Jesus, as the "suffering servant."
4) Jewish belief is based solely on national revelation
Of the 15,000 religions in human history, only Judaism bases its belief on national revelation -- i.e. God speaking to the entire nation.
Maimonides states (Foundations of Torah, ch. 8):
The Jews did not believe in Moses, our teacher, because of the miracles he performed. Whenever anyone's belief is based on seeing miracles, he has lingering doubts, because it is possible the miracles were performed through magic or sorcery. All of the miracles performed by Moses in the desert were because they were necessary, and not as proof of his prophecy.
5) Christianity contradicts Jewish Theology
The following theological points apply primarily to the Roman Catholic Church, the largest Christian denomination.
A. GOD AS THREE?
The Catholic idea of Trinity breaks God into three separate beings: The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19).
Contrast this to the Shema, the basis of Jewish belief: "Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is ONE" (Deut. 6:4).
In Jewish law, worship of a three-part god is considered idolatry -- one of the three cardinal sins that a Jew should rather give up his life than transgress. This explains why during the Inquisitions and throughout history, Jews gave up their lives rather than convert.
6) Jews and Gentiles:
Judaism does not demand that everyone convert to the religion. King Solomon asked God to heed the prayers of non-Jews who come to the Holy Temple (Kings I 8:41-43). The prophet Isaiah refers to the Temple as a "House for all nations."
Jews have never actively sought converts to Judaism because the Torah prescribes a righteous path for gentiles to follow, known as the "Seven Laws of Noah."

At the time, they didn't.
That's one of the many incredible facts hidden by the parasitic religion created by Paul of Tarsus, Josephus ben Matthias (St. Luke) and the Jewish High Priests.
See:
http://one-faith-of-god.org/new_testament/apocrypha/founders_christianity/founders_christianity_0010.htm
The father of Jesus, Joseph Ha Rama Theo ("His Divine Highness") was known throughout the ancient world as one of the richest and most powerful men. In the New Testament his identity is hidden as "Arimethea".
Everyone knew he was from the legitimate line of Kings of Judah from Princess Tamar, daughter of King Zedekiah and on his mother's side of the line of Zadok (High Priests back to Moses (Akhenaten)).
So if Jesus behaved himself and did not upset the apple cart, then Judaism would have embraced him as their Messiah and that would have been that.
But Jesus did not play ball and instead used his learning, his wisdom and his heart push him to expose the Jewish High Priests as Satanists, who hide behind double -speak but worship power, war, chaos and spiritual enslavement. He also sought to destroy Jewish scripture as a fairy story created by the Persians.
See: The Supreme Bible of God for more information.
http://one-faith-of-god.org/final_testament/bible_of_god.htm
So instead, the Jewish High Priests with Paul of Tarsus created a counter movement- christianity- to destroy his movement, his teachings and replace it with a new version of Judaism. In the process, the truth that the Jews always regarded Jesus as the Messiah until be "betrayed" the High Priests and scribes for truth.
