Boxing is good, but If you look into starting Muay Thai Boxing this is a much better street fighting martial art it includes punching, kicking, kneeing and elbowing. Also if you you want to go a step further then you could try Brazilian Jui-Jitsu for fighting on the ground in close contact. This covers all locks, for example Arm Bar etc, on the ground and even some Ground-n-Pound. But as you will know the most important attribute is your heart. if the above all fails then the best form of self-defence is RUNNING!

If self defence is your thing I recommend Krav Maga (AKA kapap) not a lot of classes around at the so seminars is were I learn it. Do karate in the mean time, confidence not be volunteering as a victim; fit enough to run away; and skilled enough to fight back if cornered by an attacker. If boxxing is that thing for oyu good luck. I mostly enjoy the team spirit of my club, fitness is a big part of it for me too.

,you could take the boxing route, alternativley you could take up something like KARATE,then maybe combine this with judu or jujitsu.
this would give you all the skills you need for self defence, you learn dicsipline, focus, confidence, fitness.
checkout.
the fighting spirit special forces techniques vol 1 you can get it @ amazon.
you have to put a lot of time & effort into a sport to get something out of it.
karate has grading system, as you progress ,you are graded using the belt system from white through to black belt takes about 3 years, but worth the wait.
good luck!!
find out where your local karate club is & join ,search the web try sports centres

There are lots of pros and cons. One pro is that boxing focuses on fighting so you will have tons of fight experience in a self defence situation.
One con is that you only learn to deal with punches not kicks, elbows, knees, grapples ect, but really in a street fight these aren't that common.
The main thing to remember when using boxing as self defence is to adapt your guard as if you hold your fists to your face and you block on your arms without your gloves padding your head you effectively punch yourself lol.
PS in Austrlaia defence is spelt with a c not an s :-)

You do feel more confident and you will feel tougher as well but make sure you save the fights for the gym in the ring and not out on the street. Good luck.

Great for self-defense but if you purchased a gun it would save you a lot of time and training.
