i have a question for christians, do you believe god will heal a
schizophrenic, bipolar, borderline personality disordered person simply and only by following jesus, and or god. or do you believe those mental disorders need medication also.

also if you believe god will heal them of their mental disorder without medication. do you also believe someone with cancer,M.S,diabetes, shouldnt take medication because god will heal them too.

mental health issues are proven to be a chemical disorder that should be treated by medication.

i'm not talking about mild depression because your sad because someone broke up with you or because you dont love yourself. or life isnt going your way. i'm talking about the above mental problems.

P.S. I think all medical conditions are a result of physical conditions, not religious matters. That's part of 21st century medicine, and some people need to catch up.

I have some insight into mental illness. Some years ago my son became severely depressed; and part of this included anxiety about whether God exists, because of something that one of his well-meaning but misguided Christian friends said to him while he was ill but not yet hospitalised. The psychiatrist and psychiatric nursing were great; and when he was hospitalised, he was given firm but sensitive care, certainly not hostile, and it was for less than a week, after which he started to get better, and is now fully well and continuing his college education. I think that if religious influences were introduced into the psychiatric treatment, the result would probably have been catastrophic. Mental illnesses and perhaps psychosomatic illnesses were considered by religious people as demonic possession. People who don't believe wouldn't do this, because if they don't believe in gods it would follow that they wouldn't believe in demons either. So, if religious influences are eliminated, it seems to be a product of professionalism and experience, and not ignorance. And there aren't any supernatural beings, including the devil. Added I just read the real Christian Purity's answer, so I'll take more care when choosing who to answer.

I have battled this question for a long time because I suffer from an anxiety disorder and am on medication. I have prayed alot over it and still I am on the meds, although my anxiety has gotten alot better. I have been told by other Christians that I can pray and my anxiety will go away, but yet I see some still taking pills for back injuries and such that tell me this. I have also been told that God wants to keep us humble and that we have to suffer with something. I think I
suffer with addiction to the meds more than anxiety, but still not sure.
Also I have been told that some people think that schizophrenics have demons, but I question that too because I use to work in a center for the mentally ill and most of them have no idea that they have these illnesses.
Anyway, read this and see what you think:

i know this question is about mental health and i cannot answer on that particular subject. but i can answer in another way.

i do believe God can do that. He did it for my mom. almost 3 yrs ago she got a very deadly rare cancer of the lymphnodes. It was actually so rare there wasnt much known on it at all. She got really sick..she was already weak to begin with so she couldnt take chemo. she stayed in the hospital most of the time half drugged up because she was in so much pain...but she kept praying and hoping that the cancer would go away. and you can beleive this or not it finally did. You wouldnt beleive how happy she was. we all were...but my mom wanted to make sure it was gone completely so she something done to make sure. something about sugar radiation..I guess its something that is put inside you and its looked at through something.. i dont know the details myself. that very night she got violently sick and had to go back to the hospital. for a little while she started feeling fine and then she took a turn for the worse and ended up in ICU. for like 2 weeks i was there everynight.....i watched as her body started shutting down, she gained a massive amount of water weight, she could barely move and towards the end she was throwing up black stuff and in such pain. she finally passed away november 2nd 2005..in the morning. I was not there. but my dad and sisters and brother was. I heard right before she passed away she had a peaceful look on her face.

the autopsy results were basically death due to complications...what complications? i have no idea...but it was not cancer.

you may read this and think i am crazy because you dont see what God did...but i do. He did cure her of cancer. maybe it was only for a while. i know what killed her...it was the sugar radiation ( if thats what it is) that did it. her body was weak to begin with like i said.

many ppl beleive that God is only worth having faith in when the good happens...but true beleif is having faith in God when even the bad happens.

God or Medication? Why does it have to be one or the other? Medication can be necessary for many mental and physical problems, but God definitely can help heal anybody of these types of problems. I think very few people understand mental health problems. Worse yet the system is letting people down time and time again. A better understanding of and treatment of serious mental health issues might have prevented the Andrea Yates children drowning and Virginia Tech tragedies. It seems like mental illness is a dirty little secret we don't want to face until it is too late.

The Lord gives, the Lord takes away. God will cure or inflict any malady purely through God's will.

Most people don't like the idea that anything and everything that happens IS God's will, through God's action or inaction, as though God doesn't have a choice or will. They attribute the "bad" things that happen to Satan, which may well be, but God still allows whatever to happen. They would rather believe that God is somehow powerless to prevent the devil from taking action in the world, than believe that God's will allows things to happen.

I think you have the whole idea of spiritual healing wrong. you are healed by your faith in Christ. we see this type of thing in medicine all the time... people being healed by placebo's. why does that work? becuse people have faith in the Dr. I believe that our bodies have the ability to heal its self... it only needs the go ahead from our psychie. In many faiths it is believed that one can be healed by the laying on of hands by one who has the authority from god to heal. I have also seen people who did not have faith in the healer recieve healing arts and stay sick. we see this all the time in medicine as well. we call it malingering... the psychie has not given the body permition to heal its self for one reason or another. I have seen broken backs which should have disabled a man be naturally splinted by his own muscle essentialy nullifing the back problem. I have seen those who should have died live because of faith. I have seen so many things both spiritual and medical which would in and of them selves give a working knowlege(not just a belief in them) of faith healings.

please do not go off your meds with out a Dr.s supervision. If you must go off them (to see if a faith healing works) have a Dr. watch for the danger signs. Unfortunately those with some of the illnesses you have inquired about have problems with reality and perception and need some one who has a firm grip on reality and perseption to be their "smoke alarm". I also believe that some are given illnessess to live through them and grow by overcoming them making you a stronger person. Be sure through prayer that this is not gods will.

God heals if you believe!

What Jesus did was what Jesus did......He cured both of those diseases with but a touch.

You obviously don't believe in Jesus, since you discredit that touch that was documented in the Bible......

Anyways....

It still is the same today, people still have miracles today, even if it isn't in your ward, they still happen......my suggestion is get on the train and start praying to HIM more instead of your rosary....

Jesus cured the mentally insane and the parapalegic, both......for you to discredit that and wonder why...lol,,,,read more, woman, and if that doesn't happen today, ......again, read more woman....it does happen.

Read more, please, education is a good thing....

Sickness need medication, however, we need the help of God by praying to God of any help to us while in the state of medication of our sickness and whether a sick man may be cured or not, we always thank God. He may have other purpose for you taking your life while on earth.
