I'm not an atheist, but I think that "compassion" and "mercy" grew from people observing cause and effect and arriving at a rational conclusion.
Example: Human1 helps find nourishment for Human2. Human2 lives through a hard winter and reproduces with Human1. Population increases.
A "common good approah", I guess you could say. Due to Darwinism, people concluded that if they banded together and helped each other out, they could flourish, thus, compassion and mercy was born.
Just my theory. I don't deny that there's a possibility of a supreme being, though. I think anyone that claims to know anything about the existence of supreme beings has a bit of a God-complex. Pardon the bad and unintentional pun.

boy if i were to take the atheistic argument i would say the instinct to protect those who are our species young and dependent awaken the parental instincts, and the instinct evolved from what helped us survive, and that you can even see alot of animals have these instincts in fact even interspecies. But animals nowadays seem to have more compassion than people as people kill innocent dependant animals, and murder and torture others. When an animal develops a relationship with another creature that is based on it's compassion or parental instinct, it does not later turn on it and torture kill and eat it- the way humans do. hahaha... even carniverous animals will not murder an herbivore if it has developed a trusting relationship with it... how strange the human species is!! How can someone look to the face of an innocent and helpless animal that looks to you for food and shelter, and maim kill and eat such a creature??!! how is it that humans torture and molest, rape and humiliate, hate, and murder each other and other creatures?! whew! kinda went on a rant there..
This is why there is hell my friends.

I would love to know how you can possibly deem normal human emotions as indicative of a religion. The two are completely unrelated. Human beings are complicated, but that is not by any divine reasons, it's because we have evolved to that point. We have reached a level where we can concern ourselves with things other than prey and survival. Granted, we still have our original carnal natures, but it is not indicative of any "God". The human psyche is a complicated thing. You will learn this if you study psychology. Everything happens by coincidence and natural causes. There is no "great plan" and there is no God. Atheists are not sad people, we are realistic. Atheists are the sorts of people who do not wish to let beliefs imposed upon us run our lives. Religion is just a way of escaping the idea of death because it offers the idea of life beyond it. Atheists accept that there is no such thing and live life to the fullest. Stop analyzing everything and just enjoy your life! It was not given to you by some all powerful force, it simply is.
Edit: Yes, we are all extremely happy with our answers. Can you see how idiotic you sound? Silly Christian zealot, public forums are for people who don't have a stick up their ***!

HuH? I'm not an atheist, but gotta wonder. How does compassion prove the existance of God? It's a function of empathy, derived from self-awareness/intelligence.
Empathy: We can imagine how WE would feel were we to be "whatever" (ie: baby, invalid, etc) Doing so tells us "sucks to be him". Having an idea of what the person's going through, we desire to help, because NOT doing so invalidates our own self worth. (if we see ourselves as a caring, decent person that is) Caring about our own well being, and being able to sense the lack of well being in others.... Where does God enter into that equation? He does'nt. I'm not argueing your belief, just your logic in this example.

Instinct is evolution. Compassion and mercy are taught. They are taught ever since you are born into the world. If your parents and everyone around you treats you compassionately and with care and love, you will turn out to be a good person. It has nothing to do with god.

Why don't you answer me the same exact question using religion. If God puts compassion in everyone's hearts, HOW does He do it?
Can you physically take me through the steps of how this is done, or is it just there?
So you're trying to prove atheists wrong because there is no factual answer to this question. But the same goes for you and religion. There's no fact, since religion is faith. And faith is not fact.

Altruistic instincts towards relations help survival. You're statement that, "Everyone feels mercy & compassion for them [babies]." is contradicted by the frequency of infanticides. Your insistence on a "WHO" shows that you are not interested in a rational naturalistic explanation.

We evolved to live in social groups, where altruism is rewarded and necessary. If we perceive our group to go beyond our immediate family and tribe we can also feel compassion for total strangers and even animals. Some biologists insist this is "misplaced" compassion, but not me: I love my pets as much as any of my friends.
Give it up, believers; you can't win against reality and reason.

Why do you feel so insecure about yourself to be thinking all of you MUST BE put together by some imaginary master? Do you not have your own brain? Or was it put by some other imaginary master too?
--------
Now, that is ironic ..... a person who needed to explain everything he has to an imaginary master and get totally lost without this security blanket calling an independent person helpless?

Compassion is when you empathize with someone who has different beliefs than you and mercy is when you forgive them for believing it.
