Whatever Katopanishad said was scientifically given as a statement by Isac Newton. " Energy can Neither Be Created Nor Be Destroyed, It is just that one form of energy that transforms into another."
We can think atom as a form of energy. It is never possible to erase a drop of water. You might think that by boiling you will erase a droplet of water. But the fact is that the water droplet actually turns into water vapour and becomes a part of our very own atmosphere. The few atoms which are lost due to heating, just dont dissapear. They transform. Any form of the most advanced Science can never claim that they have created a particle of sand. This is because, they themselves ( The Scientists) have accepted that only existing elements, which are taken from this same earth are used to form various combinations of elements.
Soul is also a form of energy. It also works only on this principle of transformations. Sanathana Dharma has faith in Rebirths. The same soul is born again and again in various forms over crores and crores of years. The person who came as Rama in thretha yuga, became Krishna in the Dwapara yuga. Soul is also cyclic. A soul can be an ant in this life while a cat in the next. the cat will be reborn as the cow and then the man. It is always that the leaf becomes the flower and the flower becomes a fruit. There is nothing like a nursery of souls.
The only end for a soul, when it dose not transform again is, when it attains salvation. There was a better explanation for this salvated souls by some chemist in India. This is the energy that populates the ionosphere of the earths atmosphere and helps in communication in the earth.
Finally, think of this. there were thousands of horses which were there and fought wars in the earlier days. what happened to all these. It is just that all these horses carcase decayed on the earth and became fossil fuels used in current day travels. thus everything are just transformations.

They have either reproduced or are already near reproducing an atom. As far as my little knowledge is concerned atom can be changed into photon which I presume to be the smallest particle. Hence atom can be transformed into electron, neutron and proton and these three particles can again be transformed into the ultimate form of matter i.e photon or something like that. (yet to be verified) Thereafter it can be imagined that the constituents of spirit or soul might be smaller than photon.
Otherwise nothing can be eliminated altogether as it get transformed into other forms of matter.

Despite the poetic liberties and obvious symbolism the answer is yes. We can erase a drop of water and a particle of sand We can wipe them out of existence. Yes we can produce a new particle of sand. And no there is no nursery of souls anywhere.
I apologize for my bluntness

no we cannot destroy an atom, no we can't produce one, no we cannot erase a drop of water, i don't believe science can produce a new particle of sand,
but what do you mean the soul once dead is dead forever? the soul is unborn never dies and is ever existing.. it doesn't die, although it goes through countless bodies getting born and dying. yes, there are new souls constantly coming, that is part of God's mystery, and Everything is constantly expanding. But being part and parcle with God, they are also eternal...This is part of the achintya chintyabheda tattva, the inconceivable truth....
I don't know about soul nurserys or star nurseries.

Yes. One way is called nuclear fission. It's the process of splitting atoms, or fissioning them. We can stimulate the decay process in a nuclear fission reactor by bombarding certain unstable atoms (types or uranium or plutonium, for example) with neutrons, causing them break up and convert some of their nuclear potential energy to heat and light. Or energy can be liberated through a fusion process, where certain simple atoms such as hydrogen are combined to form helium. In either case if you add up the mass you start with, it will equal the total of mass plus energy you wind up with. For example, the Sun and all other stars use nuclear fusion to generate their heat and light. These basic fission and fusion processes are also the basis of nuclear weapons.
Einstein showed that a consequence of his special theory of relativity is that matter and energy are coupled, and that one can indeed create or destroy matter (or energy) PROVIDED an appropriate exchange is made between matter and energy. That is, energy can be converted to matter, subtracting from the universe's store of energy and adding to the total number of atoms. Conversely, atoms can be destroyed, subtracting from the total count but thereby adding to the universe's store of energy. The conversion factor between energy and matter is Einstein's famous E = mc2

Interesting question. The Zen master Dogen said everything is flashing in and out of existence very fast. Are there souls or is there just spirit flashing? ~ : )

Nuclear fission—also known as atomic fission—is a process in nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei as fission products, and usually some by-product particles.
nuclear fusion is the process by which multiple atomic nuclei join together to form a heavier nucleus. It is accompanied by the release or absorption of energy.

Before Einstein we used to think that matter and energy cannot be created destroyed. Now we know that matter can be converted into energy and energy into matter. Today physicists say that mass-energy cannot be created or destroyed.
