Because they don't really want to be an atheist. What they are really trying to say is that it takes as much (or more) faith to be an atheist than to be a theist. This acts to raise their own irrational and faith-based beliefs to the level of the rational and knowledge/logic-based beliefs.
After saying that, they generally close off their mind to any rational discussion of the topic they raised.

problem is "faith" is not the issue here it is "ignorance".. christians like to use smarter words to avoid looking mean...
Atheists are known to be ignorant..
"i dont have enough ignorance to be an atheist" is the correct statement..
Now which christian would want to be made "ignorant"..
