We have 3 ferrets and we have 2 litter trays one in the cage and one in the corner of the kitchen.....This is a nice thing becouse when we let them out to play they go to the bathroom in the litter tray in the kitchen instead of all over the house..... It's alot easier to clean up a litter tray than going around the house looking behind everything to see where they might have deficated........

As a owner of 3 ferrets yes you really do unless you put the ferret in a smaller room then 2 should do fine but yes many are needed - cuz when they gotta go there is no time to run across the room. first corner is where it will go . And they have very nice litter pans out there .
Good luck

LOL!!! I had the exact same thought when I got my first ferret (I have 3 now). It drove me mental trying to run around after him cleaning up and the thought of having newspaper and litter boxes all over the house filled me with horror - what about my beautiful decor???!!!
In the end I watched carefully where my ferret mostly pooped and peed - this was near the tv and right by the lounge door (BUMMER!!!) I then had to put litter boxes in those 2 places and start the training process. Once I started training him to use these 2 litter boxes he stopped leaving little suprises in unexpected places! LOL. I guess what you have to do is let him pick his spot and then start to train him to use the litter box. The training was a nightmare for me with my first little rascal it took at least 8 weeks but I found a great technique to use and he was trained almost as soon as I started using it!! It's too long to tell you on here but mail me if you want talking through it. I have 2 litter boxes in my lounge, one in my hall and one in my bedroom and I'm used to them being there now, my ferts use them but do not have 100% hit rate as ferrets are never 100% litter trained, they're funny little creatures and are VERY picky about litter so don't worry if he doesn't hit the pan every time. Good luck xx

Well, first of all I want you to know that I have been through the same thing you have except, our ferret was really sick and couldn't help it. But know we have a 2-year-old ferret and you just have to train them to know where their litter box is and that is where they go. Of course you probably should have a cage and that is where the litter box needs to be. A reallly effective training method that we used was that when our ferret was 6 weeks old and we brought him home, the first time he went in the bottom of his cage we scooped it up and put it in his litter box, then made him smell the litter box, and also we disinfected the area he went in so that no smell would be left behind. Making sure no smell is left is the most important thing you can do, and to really discourage them it is good to use vinegar to clean the area, you can't smell it, but they can and they do not like the smell. Ours used to use go when he was out of the cage, but we used the same techniques as we did when we were first litter training him as well as putting him back in his cage for at least 10 minutes for punishment and now we really do not have to worry about it. Hope this helps.

The store where you purchased the ferret should have encouraged you to purchase a cage as well. After the ferret learns his cage is where he eats, drinks and poops, then he can start running around for about an hour at a time without making every corner his own. 99% of all ferrets we sell stay in a cage for a portion of the day for their own well being. We certainly do not recommend the ferret be left uncaged when no one is home. They get themselves into deadly situations because they are so curious.

First of all, ferrets aren't rodents so this question isn't in the right category.
Second, perhaps letting your ferret have full run of the house isn't a good idea then. Try letting him run in just one room first until he can remember where the litterbox is and get to it in time. Once he gets that down you can try opening up more rooms but you'll need more than one litterbox anyway. Ferrets are like toddlers....they play and play until all of a sudden they realize they need to go potty. And usually by then it's too late.
