Very unfortunately, the west abhors any form of communism and government control of the media. I am against the latter, I don't think censorship is a good thing [unless its to protect people from incredibly nasty things, censorship for political reasons is not good though], but I have nothing against communism, and to be honest I have no idea why the west seems to hate it so much. It's probably Russia and the cold war that has created the identity "communism=bad", and the fact that capitalism is the reason why the west has waxed fat, although realistically I dont think capitalism can last indefinately.
So as long as communism and censorship continues, western governments probably wont see eye to eye with Chinese politicians. Which is a shame, since China is making real progress. I don't know that many Chinese people and I have never been to China, but the west seems to think they are a terribly opressed people, which from the handful of Chinese I do know seems not to be true.
However I would hate to see China becoming more westernised in an effort to build better relations with western countries. China has a long history of being rather self-contained and with its own completely different culture, and I do not think this should have to change. One thing I notice all the time about Chinese is that they don't mind standing very close to people, which I think is quite good actually because us westerners seem positively frightened of each other and keep arms length from strangers in public places.

Mine is a footnote.. I read Kong Ming (the way of the general etc) in translated english, a long way back-- best thesis I ever did on anyone (not that many btw), I prefer to concentrate on the landscape, antiquities etc, I am not very cultured when it comes to politics, but like the architecture etc (you get the pic)I guess there's a place for everyone.

BEIJING – A total of 100 people in Panama have died from taking medicines contaminated with diethylene glycol since the first documented poisonings were reported last October. A Chinese company reportedly substituted glycerine, a safe liquid having medicinal uses, with diethylene glycol in the production of cough syrup.
The Chinese company that sold a batch of diethylene glycol, a chemical cousin of antifreeze in Panama, had no license to sell pharmaceuticals, the government said Tuesday.

I see that many are still putting the blame on "communism" in a fell swoop but I disagree.
LOL, to "liberate" the people from "bondage" and just set them "Free" without long term planning and EDUCATION is like telling a poor 10 year old to go and achieve for him/herself by whatever means they can think of. Often, they will cheat and seek short cuts, bend or break the law at the expense of others.
To truly progress, they need to maintain self discipline and continue the effort in balancing the welfare of the people. I believe they are on course in development and show the world their trustworthiness while not getting bullied by outside influences. A nation of 1.3 billion laid domant for decades doesn't just wake up and start running like a fine tuned machine. And people that see the chinese as a collection of illiterate farmers, greedy businessmen and militants are in for a surprise. But for now, we'll just have to cross our fingers for a few more years.

I totaly agree qwith TOM. China will be more understood once the other countries have the chance to realize what China is all about. They are making great progress in worldwide achievements. However, with these new assets, it is hoped that China does not loose its traditional culture.

Wow.. Minijumbofly, great answer, I agree with you wholeheartly. Yes, GURU, we really need a bit more time, may be 10 more years!
I was in Beijing in March and I saw there were a lot of policemen working on every road conjunction of Jianguomeinwei dajie (建國門外大街) all the way from CWTC to Tiananmen Square (Yeah.. my stupid co-workmates wanted to walk from CWTC to Forbidden City for nothing but just to see the buildings and people! 1.5 hours+ walk! we walked and stopped by 東方廣場 and went to Starsbuck), these policemen were there to train people how to cross the road. And to train the drivers how to drive as well. They yelled at those who didn't stop or rushed across they blew the whistles and caught them back, made them wait.
I guess, that's because of 2008 is coming soon. As for Spitting, I didn't see any in Beijing last time, but may be I wasn't aware!
It never bothers me how those who do not trust us or our government, time will show everyone what it would be. I just need to do my part good enough as a Chinese and be a happy person and certainly, I support my country if I could of any help! While minijumbofly may just crosses his fingers, I do put my fingers in trouble water (I yelled at some lazy workers when I worked in Beijing because they did something wrong without using their brains or too slow, I was there to give technical support or advices to my client!)
