It depends on what size photographs you're taking. Check your camera's manual for how many megabytes an image is on what setting (for example, on a Canon XT under "large fine" mode, the average picture is 4mb). Or, take a picture, right click on it once it's on your computer, click "Properties." This should tell you how large in megabytes your image is. This is approximately how large every picture you take (in that mode) will be. Simply divide that into 512.

It depends on the camera and the picture quality. My 6.0 megapixel camera using the highest quality can store 320 pictures on a 512mb xD card.

With the DSLR shooting RAW, I can get about 30.

In my point and shoot, I can get about 120 super hi res 4mp, or 750 normal res pics.

Movies take a lot of room for each second.

So you have many variables, RAW or JPEG. Compression of the JPEG. Megapixels/Resolution. With video, with sound.
