A stray cat keeps entering my house to steal cat food, through the small cat door into the laundry room. This cat sprays scent and generally is a nuisance. How to get rid of it in a non-violent way? Any suggestions, thanks!

Thanks, but I dont want to adopt this cat. One cat is enough in this house.

I had the same problem where stray cats would come in at night when I was asleep and eat my cats food then they would mark their territory around my cats eating area.
I sorted the problem out 70% by putting my cats food away at night and only bringing it out again in the morings.

If you already have a cat door, why not just adopt him and have him fixed? That will stop him from 'perfuming' your laundry room. And if he's already an outdoor cat, he wouldn't be much trouble to take care of. There are already so many unwanted animals in shelters--give the little guy a chance!

At your vets office they have a spray call Pheromone spray, you spray it and it keeps stray away. There are several different products for your yard. Try going to a Pet store or asking your local vet what he would recommend. That way it is safe, so when your dogs come out they aren't harmed. Also, frontline is the cheap flea protector, try a different repellent and you should not have to worry.

maybe you keep the cat door close for a while and make sure your cat isnt in heat or something.dont leave a window open.We took a stray in and she behaves better then our first cat ....maybe your cat and the stray like each other.

how sad. just wash the places of outside like the steps or wherever he sprayed with a soap detergent, and scrub. this removes the scent domain. take away the food and move it somewhere else, since thats the main problem. drastically they have cat doors that only open to cats that wear a collar with the "key" on. they wear the collar simply move up and it opens automatically cause the device on the collar, thus keeping intruders out.

Get a locking mechanism for the cat door.
They make doors that have a magnetic lock (some have infared scanners and/or computer chips). Your cat will have a collar that opens the door, but the stray will be firmly left outside.
You can try trapping it in a humane trap. You might catch yours though.

Call your local animal shelter and make arrangements to get a "cat trap". Once the animal is contained inside , they will come get it and find a home for it.

I agree with the locking cat door and collar for your cat.
Didn't you see the movie "Over the Hedge"? The locking cat door plays a role in one of the funnier scenes of the movie. (But, that's off the subject ;)

The best way would be to try and find it's owners. Put some posters around. If that doesn't work you could try finding someone who would like to adopt it.
