This is an excellent question. Since it is asked in R&S, it seems implied that the questioner is interested in the biblical or Christian meaning of the term "fornication", rather than the modern or legal meanings.

In almost every Scripture, "fornication" denotes the manipulation of sex organs for the purpose of sexual gratification, involving another person (or an animal). Biblical "fornication" includes vaginal, oral, and anal sex, as well as so-called "mutual masturbation".

So-called "telephone sex" and "internet sex" are not fornication, but they are sinful "loose conduct" if the parties are not married to each other.

(Galatians 5:19) The works of the flesh are manifest, and they are fornication, uncleanness, loose conduct

I don't have a personal definition. THE definition of fornication is sexual intercourse between unmarried persons.

Intercourse, specifically. ... "Having sex" could mean oral sex, for example, and is not fornication. BTW, I almost never use this term (fornication) - there are many better.

Reasons, marital status are irrelevant, and fornication rocks!

Fornication is an unmarried person having sex with another unmarried person. Adultery is when a married person have sex with another married person, or with an unmarried person.

That's easy. Having sex with someone you aren't married to. If either of you is married to someone else, then it becomes adultery.
