I am moving to NYC (Brooklyn Heights) for a couple months this summer (mid June-mid August). I want to know what kind of weather to expect and what kind of clothing should I bring. and are the subways really bad (temperature)???

I think "Jane D" meant the subways are hot as *Hades,* (the Greek version of Hell, opposed to the Caribbean country she mentioned). But anyway...

Don't do the cash in the bra thing. Gross. As long as you keep your wallet at the bottom of your purse, and it has a zipper, you're fine. NYC is much safer than most people give it credit for.

Flip flops may keep your feet cooler, but the city is quite dirty and you'll find yourself scrubbing your feet every night.

I'd suggest lots of light fabrics and dressing in layers. Don't try to get too matchy-matchy or you'll look like a tourist. Just make it your own style and you'll fit in in no time!

The subway platform is hot (feels about 10 degrees hotter than whatever the temp is) but the trains these days have ac most of the time. As for clothing, think layers.Tank tops or t shirts with a light cardigan for when you are in the stores where they keep it freezing. I highly recommend skirts, cotton, knee length, as sitting on trains etc in shorts is gross. Just my opinion. Shopping in all parts of NYC and the boroughs is great, so you will be able to pick things up as you need them. Pretty cheap too.

Footwear - Nice sandals/leather flip flops are good.To build a good NY wardrobe, start with neutral colors. Get a denim skirt, and a black linen or cotton skirt (doesn't show dirt) and build from there. A black cardigan (or a colorful one!) would be a good starter piece too. A few simple sundresses will be perfect too - you can throw the cardigan over them, or a shirt and go anywhere.

NY in summer is pretty humid, so layers are important, as are natural fibers like cotton and linen. Always bring a light jacket or cardigan though, better safe than sorry/freezing - that's my biggest tip :)

As for bags and accessories - you can get those cheap at the many fleamarkets etc....Have fun!

(And by the way, Brooklyn Heights is a very safe neighborhood, don't do that whole cash in the bra thing - ewww - just keep your wallet at the bottom of your bag and buy purses with a zip top which should be kept towards you, or with a secure inside zip pocket)

Do not wear flip flops, your feet will get dirty and you will look tacky. They are fine for the beach but walking in Manhattan, fuggedaboutit. The same goes for shorts, you just don't do them here unless you are a tourist. You will need a sweater, jacket, shawl or something because the busses and subways will feel over air-conditioned compared with the street and subway platforms which will be hot. Bring layerable clothing and wear what is appropriate for your position. If you have a job you have to look professional no matter how hot it is outside. It will be muggy in the summer and if you spend any time outdoors wear a lot of sunscreen and carry water around with you.

NY has seasonal weather, sometimes summer in NYC has heat spells that linger for days. Almost every where you go there will be an A/C on (except on subway platforms). Wear comfortable clothing !

Well... no one has answered you yet. I live in N.Y. Upstate. NYC is a bit hotter and muggier than we are so I would bring shorts and lots of T-back type sleavless tees. Light weight cotton to absorb sweat is the way to go. If you are dressing up, you could also go sleavless and bring along a shawl for a couple of chilly nights when there is an occasional cool front and a thunder storm pops in. I hear we are in for a hot and sticky one.

comfortable walking shoes ( new yorkers walk everywhere)
high heeled sandals
nice..well cut summer dresses...think sleek..sophisticated..
sheeth dresses.
soft colours..cottons, silks, linens,
t shirts..white jeans..beige lightweight trousers.
ballet flats
lightweight cotton sweater ( places are air conditioned)
lightweight raincoat( we do get summer thunderstorms)
no shorts ( new yorkers don't wear them)
no flip flops ( tourists only)
be careful with spaghetti strap dresses..unless there a jacket with them..they are best for nighttime only.
the subway can be wicked .
it can get very hot in august..high humidity and usually a heat wave lasting about 4 days...we had a terrible one last summer...and the air in manhattan was the worst i ever remember it to be. it hit 103 degrees one day.
the weather can range from clear sunny and warm
to clear sunny & hot..
to hazy humid and sticky.
temps range from 75 degrees and up....
nighttime about 68...it never really cools off at night..because of all the asphalt and concrete absorbs the heat all day...
bring a bottle of water everyday with you..
with all the walking..you do get thirsty.
a good large handbag..to carry everything..
you will fall in love with this city..guaranteed!

The subways have air conditioning. Most important thing you need to bring is comfortable walking shoes.

Bring loose and light colored clothing. It is hot and humid and the sun is very strong. So no dark clothing and short sleeves, short pants, easy walking shoes, sunglasses and a hat are all recommended.

I like young girls in jeans. It creates them look more home town like and it generally does not look like they are trying too much but if you are trying to get this men attention, this might not exactly be what you would like

I do enjoy wearing long skirts occasionally. They are actually more comfortable than Jeans and not as hot to wear also.
