1) Change your razor frequently. (3-5 shaves if you have thick hair)
2) Use a good shaving gel and rinse out the blade in between strokes.
3) Scrub your legs in between shaves w/ a body puff to exfoliate the top layer of skin.
Schick Quattro & Aveeno sensitive skin gel = the best shave I've ever had.

First question - was it a good idea? If you're comfortable with it, and with the possible reaction of others toward your decision, then that's what matters. Second question - How long do they last? What those bumps are is ingrown hairs (hairs that are growing from the roots but don't quite make it through the normal opening from the root to the skin); they will last until the hair breaks through the surface of the skin. Waxing your legs may prevent them, or at least delay them; also, waxing will kill a few roots each time, so you might want to consider it until you get the amount of hair down to a level you feel comfortable with. As to what I prefer - I honestly don't care whether a man is "hairy" or not; it's the person that matters to me.

Tend Skin.I first saw this product in Sky Mall. If it's in there it works.I've been using it for 8 years.I never shave with out it.It also good for waxing soothes razor burn and leaves skin smooth. You can find it in most beauty supplies. Also make sure you are using good razors(Mach 3)keep them wet after a few strokes to keep strips lubed and don't go against the direction hair grows.Try hair conditioner instead of shaving cream.

those are probably ingrown hairs. exfoliate, then use a NEW razor blade and shaving cream the next time you shave. shaving cream extend the life of your blades and helps prevent razor bumps.
you can also switch to an electric razor - no bumps, shave isn't as close for some though.

I have found that it really helps if you exfoliate your legs first and then use a shaving cream for sensitive skin and also dont use one of those razors with alot of blades stick to two or three. When you are done use a lotion without a sent that is for sensitive skin. That works for me.

you must be using a dirty razor or shaving against the grain instead shave the way your hair grows on your leg and that might help also if you go to adult stores they have creams that work so you get no bumps i forgot what the name is but they got it.

Razor burn! Make sure to shave with a sharp razor (It should glide across your skin, not drag), and use shaving cream, not soap, since it sounds like you have sensitive skin. You might also need to use a body lotion that doesn't have fragrance in it so that it doesn't irritate your skin.
