We’ve been dating about 1.5 years, I've just graduated college. Don’t get me wrong: things are really good. Our relationship is bizarrely healthy. I’ve been a cat person my entire life.

He asked me who I love more; I said “I love you equally.” Y’know, kitty gets my maternal affection, boyfriend gets romantic affection.

He thinks it’s weird that I wouldn’t immediately list him as “winning.” But man, my cat frickin' rocks. This isn’t a matter of hypothetically giving one up, saving one from a fire or whatever (human wins the fire scenario). He just thinks it’s a little weird that it took me so long to come to the conclusion that I love him more, and was a little insulted that I initially said I loved them equally.

He thinks most people would quickly decide that they love their human significant others more than their animal companions, and that my response was “weird.”

Who do you love more?

I think human love and animal love is a bit different. He is being too nit picky. I love my dog and two cats more than any people. They love you unconditionally, never give you heartache, never cheat on you, never lie to you, etc. My husband knows I love him more than any man I ever met, but he jokes if it came down to him or the dog, he ain't too sure he'd be around. Your boyfriend is too sensitive. You love him, but you can love your pets too. I'd get rid of a date before a pet.

That response IS weird . . . finding a person you can get along with is WAY harder than finding a cat you can get along with, for one. Also, humans are more valuable than cats. What would you think if he came to you one day and said he loved you and his car (or his pet tortoise) as much as he loves you? Wouldn't you be pretty upset? I think he's taking what you said very well, actually. I'd probably be looking for a way to break up with you if I was your boyfriend and I thought you were serious when you said that. My advice: lighten up your relationship with your cat and put that energy into your relationship with your boyfriend. You'll both be happier. Good night!

He only thinks its weird because your cat isn't a human being who has feelings and the like. He doesn't know how long you've had your cat, and the bond you have with it. He also doesn't realize that you give your cat maternal love. Get him to see it from your point of view. Trust me, people think I'm weird from how much I love my cat. But explain your relationship with your cat, and at least have him see where you're coming from.

Start calling your cat "Honey" and I'll think that's weird.

I don't know, I think on a given day I would take my lizard over any man.... but I really love my lizard. He is soooo cute, so, yeah, I know what it is like to love a pet that much.

I love my dog. He never yells at me, always knows when I am upset, doesn't care if I look terrible, and entices me to exercise. What more could a woman want?

Probably equally too! Weird, isn't it.

Animals give you unconditional love. That's why it's so hard to compete with.
