Technically, dogs don't have periods, It's called going into heat or going into season. Dogs usually go into heat at approximately 6 moths of age, but can go into heat as late as one yer.

The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.

The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.

Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.

Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.

While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. It I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

I hope this helped you :-)

My dog beat me to it and started her first period three days before she was set to be fixed. Since they won't fix a dog in heat I had to wait over two weeks for her stop. I was surprised by how long it went on.

My dog has gone into heat (got her period) twice and each time she bled for two full weeks; 14 days. You can get dog "diapers" for this at Petsmart and PetCo. I've even used cloth baby diapers and cut a hole out for her tail. This saves money but you need to do a lot of laundry with cloth diapers.

When dogs have a period the uterine lining is absorbed so there is no bleeding. Your dog is in heat. You should get her spayed.
