In the U.S., is it considered bad etiquette to place your carry-on bag somewhere other than the compartment that's directly above your seat on an airplane? Please let me know. I kinda feel guilty when I do it but I'm not from the US.

That is true, but sometimes it can't be helped!

No, its OK. You should try to place it as close to your seat as possible or under the seat in front of you. Bags are different sizes so its not always possible for everyone to use the compartment directly overhead.

The plain facts are that you put your bag where you can find space. My biggest gripe os the airlines not enforcing their own rules as it pertains to carry ons. I get bent at those who come on board with a carry on, laptop, DVD player, 4 bags from the Duty Free Shop plus 6 more for their kids....

If it cannot fit in the overhead bin or underneath your seat you should get it checked plane-side. That way it will be there when you get off the plane. But you should stick it in the overhead bin or under your seat.

BAD ETIQUETTE.........IN AMERICA?!?!?!?!?!?

Does such a thing exist? I was under the impression that EVERYTHING Americans did was bad etiquette?

Don't listen to what they say about etiquette. They don't even know what the word etiquette is.
