find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

The plan I learned to follow was one of just following the food pyramid, that's what Weight Watchers is based upon.
As you wish to lose weight, start by choosing the minimum amounts of each food group needed in the food Pyramid.
Shopping plays a major part as well. Do what I call "perimeter shopping" That means shopping in the outside perimeter, which in most stores means the fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh low-fat dairy products, whole grain breads, well trimmed meat, fish and poultry and skipping the premade canned foods, which tend to be high in fat, sodium, sugar, excess starches and loads of preservatives.
You can borrow a library book on a good diet, or research on the web.
Once you have found something healthy and appealing, make yourself a bargain by sticking to it, no matter what, for a full week. This will give you time to get accustomed to a new form of eating, and will also help to shrink your stomach, so you'll be satisfied with less.
Remember to drink a glass of water before and with each meal, as this will help you to feel full faster.
If eating out, push away the bread basket, or take one small portion, without butter or margerine.
While eating salad, put the dressing on the side, and dip your fork into the dressing, then grab a forkful.. it will taste as good as dousing it, with only a fraction of the calories. Or try one of those new spray salad dressings. They are truly delicious!
If you are currently not very active, start doing some neighborhood walking, and add a bit of distance each week.

Free weights are very inexpensive and you can do lots of exercises with them. Jogging requires only a pair of jogging shoes. Eating well is cheap. frozen chicken breasts and frozen vegetables cost nothing compared to junk food dinners.
first set an ideal body image, its okay to set your goal high, in fact its better if you do. Keep that mental image in mind as you exercise. Make a defined exercise plan. the first week will be tough, but after that its easy.

try weight loss forums...
they are helpful its a group of like minded people offering support and motivation.
As for cheap diets... they arent expesive... dont eat junk food... you can buy your veges and fruit for cheap from markets or fruit and veg stores. and as for excercise, if you cant afford to go to the gym you dont need one. its simple power walk for 30 mins a day... you could get some cheap excercise dvd's off ebay.
weight loss isnt really expensive its just another excuse as to why you cant do it.

The second poster has some valid points.
Buying your groceries and cooking your own food is the cheapest way to practice good nutrition.
Also, here is a healthy food list, a sample meal plan, and a workout that you can do with a pair of dumbells and an exercise ball.
