I have three male mice, two brothers from the same litter and their dad, they all climb on the bars of their cage and pee... the dad does this more than the brothers. It's really gross and horrible to clean and I don't know why they do this. Any ideas? Is there a way to discourage this?

I had mice a whiel ago..now i have a cute baby gray rat. I do not think that they purposely mean to pee on the bars. Unless you actualyl see yours do. I think that maybe their paws (both front and back) might be dirty from stepping in their cage. Maybe you have seen them pee! maybe it is because when they climb the cage, the bars rub agianst his privates and trigger him to pee. A way to discourage this? not sure if there are good soultions.. I know that rats can be trained to use the bathroom in a certain spot in the cage. It probaly works for mice as well. Create a spot in the cage that will be "the bathroom". Most mice and rats naturaly pick an area and only use that area. WHen you are cleaning the cage, observe to find a spot more wet than others. you should put a box or somethign there. Just make sure you use differnt material (bedding) to distinguish the difference. Anytime they poop, put it in the area. If you catch them peeing, pick them up and place them in the spot. Goodluck!

I dont know, my hamsters do the SAME thing, it shoots out onto the side of the shelf they sit on, its pretty gross. So, about 5 months ago, I had my dad get two really huge clear plastic containers about 2 feet long,by 10 inches tall, drilled 30 air holes in the top lid and a big hole to slide the water bottle down in, voila! Huge roomy house, they have always loved them, no more poo shooting out the sides, and clean up is So easy, dump the stuff out, and spray it with a hose.

I would rather pee out the window so I don't have to sleep or walk in it. That is why.

they do it to annoy you, stop putting your nose close to the bars and talking baby language to them
