There are different crosses. The standard cross is plain. Then there are crosses like the Greek Orthodox, which has a sash over the horizontal bar. Then you have Celtic designs and modern designs, ones with and ones without Jesus hanging on them. There are even crosses with a peace sign on them. There are crosses made from nails, twigs, rose thorns...
Some groups accept only what they believe to be true and proper. Some groups accept no cross at all choosing to celebrate Jesus life rather his death. (This is why Mormons do not wear the cross. And they ARE Christians.)
I hope that I have helped you. I used to manufacture jewelry, and we made thousands of crosses and crucifixes in many different styles.

My knowledge of symbolism is rather esoteric, but the cross is as old as Egypt. My distinction between crosses is if they are a Calvary cross with long southern arm or an equilateral one. The Cross of Christianity is a "battle" cross and the ones with four equal arms inside a circle are symbolic of the four directions and many other things. The "upside down" cross is a naughty one and this one I reject, but I acknowledge evil as general guidelines for what not to do for long term well being.
A good bookstore may have a book on the different crosses, I remember seeing in print once the Lutheran Cross, but the Lutheran Church that lets me sit in it Sundays has a Neo Gothic Cross over the Altar. Substance trumps style no matter what in my book. I hope you find the symbol that best inspires you and all that you are.

We (Catholics) have a crucifix which has the image of Jesus on it. Protestants (who, coincidentally, are Christians just like Catholics) have just a cross w/out the image of Our Lord on it. Eastern Orthodox Catholics have a crucifix like the Roman Catholics but with two bars across it. Sorry, but I'm not sure about Jehova's Witnesses. To celebrate a Mass, a Catholic Church must have a crucifix.

I do not believe that most Prods will wear a crucifix (has the figure of Christ on the Cross), except perhaps the Anglicans.
