Some Christians say that the earth is only 6,000-8,000 years old.

Yet there are stars that are many hundreds of thousands even millions of light-years away from us. The fact that we can see them at all proves that their light has traveled for more than a million years.

Did god do this so we could have a nice light show... wouldn't this cause us to have extreme doubt in him ... or is it the devils evil doing?

How old do you believe the earth to be?

(Me? i believe, like most scientists, that the Earth is around 4 Billion years old.)

I had a very simple question.

some answered this question ... and others ... decided to ramble about nothing.

How old do you believe the earth to be?

The earth could be billions of years of age.
In the Beginning, God created the heavens and the earth and that could have been billions of years ago.
After the creation, something happened and God had to recreate the earth. The account that we see in Genesis 1 is the recreation of the earth.

"Yet there are stars that are many hundreds of thousands even millions of light-years away from us. The fact that we can see them at all proves that their light has traveled for more than a million years." Thanks and I agree.

That has posed a difficult question for most Christians to answer. Lets suppose for the sake of argument that the earth and all that has been created has been around for only 10,000 years. Thus the light that we see from the stars that are the farthest away could only be 10,000 light years at best. So lets us for the sake of this same argument, continue with that assumption, if so then Light that travels at 186,000 mps must then slow down relatively. This slowing down would not appear to us for we are only the receivor of such spectrum we do not have the starting point as we could use verifiable measuring device. And light is all we have, because we have not been there where the light has been birthed. Thus our perception of how fast and how constant it travels is purely subjective.

This is proven by light spreads out as it travels, and even a laser beam of only several millimeters in diameter shot to the moon comes back as one that is several feet in diameter. However even this measuring device is faulty because it is too short of a distance and there is no other closer extra terrestrial body that can be tested to prove how much light expands and if it expands it also must lose speed and energy as it travels, thus light cannot travel at a constant throughout the universe. .

This is a hypothetical statement because there is no way that I can prove it, to me that is more plausible to understand that to show that the cosmos is 6-10 Billion years old!

Not to state that I am ignorant in this subject I got a A+ in Earth Science, I still love astronomy and the stars and the galaxies are magnificent and beautiful - I am just not prepared to swallow whole their so called theories of its age.

To say that I believe the whole cosmos including the earth is only at the outer rim is only 10,000 years old. I believe that there was a great world flood, and because of this one period of an ice age occurred very rapidly over several years to a hundred years at most not thousands as theorized, I believe that there were dinosaurs abiding with man, and this too is explainable in pre-flood environment. All things created. God created them in the exact way He specified in the Genesis account. I honestly don't know why there is this great lightyear problem. I offered an explanation as plausible maybe possible for one way that may have occurred.

Okay. Here's a simple answer to your question. I guess I have to make it a little bit more understandable. If the Bible doesn't say when the stars were created then I'll go with what the scientists say. I strongly believe that the Bible and science can work together. If you need it more simple--6,000-8,000 years old.

There are many things that I feel were left out of the Bible. For example--when did God create the planets? When did God create the stars? When did God create Dinosaurs?

Christians have faith that what they believe is true. I have faith that what I see is true. I'm not denying science. I'm not saying that theory is incorrect. But isn't there a link somewhere that the Bible can measure up to? I think there is.

The Bible left out lots of things. I mean lots of things but the majority of it was the 'important' stuff. Plus I really believe that it's been altered over time but everything that God wanted us to see is there. He wouldn't let it be completely out of whack.

It's fine if you have different views but really why challenge others if they are content in what they believe in?

An interesting fact to add to the mix, the earth is described in Genesis as having a surface that was covered with water prior to the six days of creation. Food for thought.

edit: I have no idea how old the earth is, however I do believe it to be well more than 6,000 years old and I believe the bible supports that conclusion.

I not sure.

However, did the light not travel while the earth was absent?

Introducing an object (like the earth) into an existing beam of light would seem like a reasonable explanation for being able to see the stars.

Of course, like I said earlier, I do not know. Nor am I really worried too much about it.

Yeah and theres over 50 billion galaxies and we think we're the only ones out there. Yep. We're not even ANYTHING in the universe and we think we're so big and giant and holy? Nah, if the universe is around 18 billion years old, or so they say, then there would've been the chance for lots of worlds like ours to have taken place. Perhaps some planets are even in their Precambrian stage, like that one planet we just found. Once our sun blows up in about 6 billion years and this solar system ceases to exist, I'm pretty sure the universe will go on and more life forms will form in billions and billions of years.

And where is your PROOF that their light has traveled for more than a million years?...

I say that the universe was created with everything in place.. even the light traveling at the right places to confound scientists.. kinda like stop action.. place the light where it is going.. ok.. ACTION!...

Perhaps the Earth was created with fossils in the ground.. *GriN*

Its all simple. The earth has only been in existance for the last 2.78 minutes. Everything was created with the appearance of being older than 2.78 minutes. Our memories were given to us by the almighty for some unknown divine purpose.

Honestly I am unsure on this one, I haven't done a great deal of research into it, but I believe God could have made things to appear to be old, or they could really be as old as we date them to be. Either way I am good with, but I don't know enough to say for sure which stands out to me.

The count of 6,000-8000 years is from known time backwards to the point where Adam and Eve left the garden.

Nowhere does it state how long they were in the garden.
