I've asked people why they hate/dislike gay people so much and I pretty much get the same excuse "It's against the Bible." This coming from people who, other than that one thing, don't really follow anything else in the Bible, never go to church, never show any inkling of their religion, other than to use it as a convenient excuse for homophobia. This isn't addressed to those who do follow the bible as much as possible, but for those hypocrites out there who use religion/the Bible when it is convenient and then stomp all over it when it doesn't suit their purposes.

Expertless: it looks like you didn't really read too much, you asked if I'm drawing my experiences from only one person, did you ready where I said "people" and "they all?" You really fit your title.

Demosthenus: Sorry to hear that you were raped. That is no excuse for homophobia though. Do you think that girls who are raped should hate all straight males?

Christy: People are allowed to have their own opinions, but opinions shouldn't infringe on peoples' rights, and homophobes are keeping many Americans from the Pursuit of Happiness, which is promised in the constitution. Also, I am allowed to have an opinion on other peoples opinions, and that is what Yahoo Answers is for.

Kat J: Obviously you aren't the type of person I am referring to. I am referring to those who explicitely use the bible as their reason for being homophobic. It is one reason to truly believe that being homosexual is against the bible, and still "love thy neighbor." I am talking about those so-called "Christians" who use the Bible as a reason to hate their neighbor and keep them from their rights.

I think you've got 'er all figured out perfectly. Most religious people pick and choose what they like about their faith, and discard the rest. So if they have no trouble with homosexuals, you'll hear, "God loves all of us." If they do have a problem (and, saddly, thanks to social conditioning, most do), you'll hear the multitude of quotes which either directly bash the gay lifestyle... or even quotes that *might* bash homosexuals. It all depends on the loudmouth on the soapbox.

There is much more in the bible about heterosexual sins (fornication, adultery, divorce, etc.), but nobody seems to care about those. Look at the very high divorce rate amongst born-again Christians. I've heard all kinds of excuses about how God overlooks this and how he knows the hearts of people in those situations, but yet a gay person is automatically condemned.

Here's a Baptist article about the evangelical divorce rate:

http://www.baptiststandard.com/2000/1_12/pages/divorce.html

And here is a self-righteous, intolerant statement from gluttonous Rev. Jerry Falwell:

"[homosexuals are] brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven." Jerry Falwell: Quoted in Jim Hill and Rand Cheadle, "The Bible Tells Me So", Anchor Books (1996), Pages 69-70

Go figure. It won't take long to see the astounding hypocrisy.

Why are you a Christophobe and a Bibliophobe? Why are you so bigoted toward those who believe in the Bible? Why are you so judgemental? Why do you hate/dislike Christians, whether or not you consider them hypocrites?

Isn't your defense of a behavior most religions consider sinful and aberrrent just an excuse to hate Christians? What do you mean by "those who follow the Bible as much as possible?" How can you make that kind of judgement?

I seriously doubt that those you call the hateful term, "homophobic," truly fear homosexuals.

Like most people, I have family members, friends, or acquaintences who are homosexual. I know many more who are adulterors and engage in sexually immoral behavior. I still love them.

I do not fear them. I do not hate them. I do recognize their behavior as sinful and I refuse to participate in it or condone it.

In most cases in this world, we do not know the "truth" of any argument. We try to use evidence to support our beliefs. Only where belief overlaps the truth do we have knowledge. I would venture to say that most people have very little "knowledge" about our world.

Perhaps a little tolerence on your part would change your perception of those religious folk you can't stand.

Keep seeking the truth, but don't let false beliefs prevent you from gaining knowledge. Knowledge is a spiritaul gift from God. May you be as considerate of those who disagree with you as you expect them to be of you. God bless you.

No in view that not all religions adhere to that concept. in actuality not all religions even use the Bible. Sorry basically a puppy peeve, human beings applying the term "faith" whilst they're fairly which means "Christianity" or another particular grouping. As for why some human beings accuse atheists of having no morals, is all the way down to a loss of mirrored image on the place their very own morality comes from. resembling the concept that atheists have not have been given any ethical absolutes and yet replace the regulations of the Bible showing it is loss of absolutism. outdoors of arithmetic we've very few absolutes to hang too. _()_ _()_

i for one think they just need an excuse.

Bigotry of any form usually hard to justify without showing a lack of tolerance and understanding.

In this case people that are homophobes need an excuse to justify their biasness. Since the bible explicitly states that homosexuality is wrong; there you go, ready made and authoritive "source" to quote from

For those who are not very devout and undecided, they usually look to religion and philosophy for an answer to such a ethical question. So out comes the bible (or any other religious text that frowns down upon homosexuality) again.

No. I'm religious, and am not homophobic. I do not use my religion to mask bigotry, which is what homophobia is. Whereas some religious practitioners may indeed be homophobic, that can hardly be said of all of them. Many religious groups are becoming increasingly tolerant and open toward the gay community.

Many women think they approve of gays when they really feel gays are harmless to them...both in the workplace as far as promotions or ambition, as far as sexual violation and physical violance.

They consider gays to be eunuchs, and as a result their workplace is one where "many cows serve one bull' ...the CEO.

You really don't respect gay people, and as a result you penalize yourself in the workplace as wage-slaves.

I don't need religion to make excuses for homophobia.

What with the high cost of petroleum the cost of Vaseline has skyrocketed. That is reason enough for me.
