Just curious. I was sitting next to her in class and she just said I got a new haircut. Did she want me to compliment her or something?

Yup. She either wanted you to validate she looked good with the new hair style OR she would like you to pay more attention and this was her way of opening the door to a conversation.
So, tomorrow make a positive comment about something like her hair or whatever, and see if you and she could become friends.

It seems that she was. Hope you said something nice. When people fish for a compliment they usually don't get many. Or, they are unsure of themselves and in need of some good encouragement from an outside source.

Thats just how girls are. Be open-minded. If you pay attention to how girls talk, you can start understanding us more. That's like me asking why do guys care so much about stupid sports or who cares about getting an xbox? It's a guy thing. Usually when a girl strikes up a pointless conversation, its usually because she's bored and wants someone to talk to for a minute or she just might like you, or she thinks you're gay and wants your opinion.

She wants you to notice her! That's one thing girls get annoyed about guys. They change their hair, they dress up, JUST for that special dude. But then the guy doesn't notice.
And YOU'RE that special dude. She really likes you. :)
So the next time you see her or something, COMPLIMENT. Nice shoes, nice earrings or something. She'll really appreciate it big time.

yes you should have said "wow I love the new haircut". Even if it looked hideous you would come across as being a nice guy.

She at least wants you to notice. Try lettng the girls know when they make a change. Even if you are not interested you are paying attention.
