I honestly haven't noticed a whole lot of difference, and a lot of it depends on where you are at, some duty free stores have a limited selection of items, some have more.

Duty Free Canada To Usa

It depends on the crossing, and in fact sometimes regular stores can be cheaper than duty free prices, especially for alcohol. For example (and personal experience) there are only 3 liquor items in the whole Canadian duty frees in Québec that are cheaper than the regular prices in New Hampshire, and prices for Canadian lagers are cheaper just about everywhere in nearby American states (albeit much of the Canadian beer sold in the USA is canned whist almost all in Canada is bottled which many think tastes better). Most wines are also cheaper in regular American shops than in Canadian duty frees, (do we ever stock up when we can get to an American Trader Joe's or to the big Mass. wine stores!) and the USA wine taxes are so low that American duty frees often do not sell any. The ironic exception are fine wines from the Niagara and B.C. wine growing areas; these are in such short supply and in so much demand in the States that what few can be found south of the border are often 3 or 4 times what they sell for in Canadian provincial monopoly stores even with all the taxes, and maybe 6 or 7 times what one would be priced - if you are lucky to find one - at a Canadian duty free.

From the opposite direction, again the per ml price of spirits at American duty free can be a bit higher than at regular American stores because the largest duty-free size is only 1.14 litres and not 1.75 litres, but either from an American duty free or regular American store the per ml is vastly less than what spirits cost in Canada.
