Cogito ergo sum (I think, therefore I am) is from Descartes a philosopher from the 16th/17th century. His original phrase was Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum (I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am) was shortened to the modern day saying because the original was too long.
