i am trying to find a wedding dress but having a really difficult time. i want more of an evening gown look instead of a big flashy wedding dress. i'd like a halter top and maybe even a lace up back. our wedding will be outside near the water. we will only be having about 50 guests. it's gonna be more of a wedding party kinda occasion. but i still want to stand out. i am a size 16 and hardly anyone carries dresses that i'm looking for in that size. its been hell! anyway! has anyone had a dress made specially for you? did it turn out exactly like you wanted it to? i've been told by some people it was AWESOME, and then i've heard from others NOT to get a dress made. i'm in the houston area, so if you know of someone GOOD, let me know!

First thing: you need to find a seamstress you trust and make sure you're involved in picking the fabric.

90% of the bad "home sewn" outfits people are probably afraid of is because of second rate fabric! I can't stress this enough: fabric fabric fabric. If you like, there are some fantastic books about choosing the right fabric for a sewing project that might help you out.

I can't think of any reason other than that for you to not have your dress made. I had mine made especially for me, by a college student no less! She was a fashion design major who was graduating and she was superb to work with, I loved her so much and she made the PERFECT dress. It came out exactly like I wanted, she really listened to me and did everything I asked. If she couldn't do something, she explained why. She was very patient and very good at saying "I know you think this would look good, but this is why it wouldn't."

But for the most part, I went in saying what I wanted and she made it happen. I wish I had other reasons to wear my dress, I was that happy with it.

Also, for the record, I'm a larger size and a very odd size. So I would have had to have a dress bought a size too large and tailored which would have been idiotically expensive. Instead I paid for the fabric (less than $50) and her time and efforts ($150, which my parents paid as my wedding present).

I encourage everyone I know that's getting married to explore the possibilities of getting their dress made for them. So def. look into it!

If you are in the Houston area, go to High Fashion Fabrics downtown. They are on the corner of Elgin and and Travis. They can recommend a dressmaker to you. Be sure and ask the dressmaker lots of questions about their experience. You may even want to call and see if you can make an appt with a dressmaker. Also, get some reference and look at pictures of some gowns they have made. High Fashion has beautiful evening wear fabrics, supplies for veils, etc.! Be forewarned, having your dress custom made is not necessarily cheaper than buying one but you should be able to get exactly what you want.

I'm having mine made for me just now, in fact I have a dress fitting tonight, can't wait to see how it is coming along. I also decided against a traditional dress and have opted for a cocktail dress. I am sure it will be perfect as I had long discussion with my dress maker and made sure we both knew what the other one was talking about. I'd get a local directory for your area and have a look at some websites for local dress makers, have a long talk with them and explain exactly what you are looking for, you shouldn't have any issues.

I dont know of any seamstress, but have you tried online bridal stores and looked at the bridesmaid dresses. I saw some beautiful evening gowns on http://www.justthebeginnings.com. I think she hand makes them and you can add the top, sleeves, etc. to any gown.

Try googling "plus size gowns". You will get alot of hits for everything from cocktail gowns to ball gowns and everything in between. I have linked a few sites below that I (a plus size woman) have checked out recently.

Good Luck and happy marriage!
