You are a wonderful son to want to help your dad and I am sure he is proud of you. Muscle cramps are often caused by dehydration, mineral depletion or depressed nerves. Encourage your dad to drink Gator Aide and water like the athletes during the day especially if he has a job that is physically stressful. He may want to take a multivitamin too. If he has a job where he sits for long periods of time encourage him to take frequent stretch breaks. If that doesn't help he needs to make a doctor's appointment.

there are many reasons for leg cramps, one is lack of potassium. And a simple cure is to eat bananas, or drink Gatorade. There is also a medicine prescribed by doctors that help night time cramps especially called quinine. But if the cramps are happening after sports or being outside, or if you dad takes a diuretic it is probably related to an electrolyte imbalance most likely potassium

It is possible that your dad has low potassium which can cause leg cramps. Try some bananas or other foods high in potassium. If your dad is on any cholesterol medication like Lipitor etc. it could be a side effect.

Try potassium or b-complex vitamins. Your dad might want to try sleeping in a different position too, or even get a new mattress if the one he has is old or breaking down.

There is one other thing your dad might want to check: For many years, my grandfather had a problem with circulation in his legs. And eventually the muscles in his legs atrophied because of it.

Good luck!

he needs to go see a Dr. the cramps could be from anything. Like signs of a stroke or just tensed muscles.while checking it out with the Dr. he really should drink 8 glasses of water or more. And try the banana thing. That's lost of potassium.
Good luck and God bless.
