I have a set of led lights that go into my car and the wire isnt long enough. I opened them up to extend the wire and what i found was a red wire connecting to a switch and a green wire connecting to a diode. Is it safe to lenthen the wire? and how would i go about doing so? should i put to new wires in the place and connect the other ends to the red and green? or just sepperate another wire at the same place those are? neither the red and green are sheilded seperatly

Hold the phone please! BEFORE yo even think about cutting into another wire and shunting it into place to power the L.E.D.'s, yes you CAN lengthen the wires on the lights you have purchased. Now, let's not do this half A$$ed okay? Otherwise, you'll regreat it big time. Take yourself to Radio Shack and get some wire about the same color as what you have coming off of the lights. Now, cut about a half inch of the wire shielding off of the wire you bought(by the way, you'll need to measure about how much you'll need for the car and then give yourself about another two inches for good measure) on both ends. The lights you have should already have about the same already exposed for use, if not, remove what you need and no more. Using flux-based solder, solder the extra wire to the light's wiring. Cover with some liqiud wire plastic avaliable at any good auto parts store and let dry. The way you describe the wires on the lights is that they are just two different wires that were injection molded together. just pull them apart gently to separate them BEFORE use. If they are bare(non-plastic coated) wires, ditch them for ones that are coated else you run the risk of an elecrtic short in the whole car. Not only can you blow every fuse this way, you CAN possibly even cause a power surge to the battery and cause the battery to explode! I've seen this happen a few times and it's really not pretty, so be carefull please!

Yes.Make sure that you use the same guage wire.Remove the wires one at a time.Use a soldering gun to make a good solid splice.A cold heat soldering gun will work great but is not neccessary.Cut the wire to the required length and solder in place. Then do the other wire.Make sure you use the same color so as not to confuse yourself later. If needed you may tape over each solder splice if there is a chance that the connections may touch each other. All parts and tools needed can be bought at a car supply store and should cost less than $20 bucks total.Good Luck.
