Sounds as if you’re in Overtype Mode. Is there an “OVR” on the bottom line of the window?
To fix it for a single file, press the Insert key once.
If this happens every time you open a document, your Options are probably set to start in Overtype mode. Here's how you can fix that:
1. Click on the Tools->Options menu item.
2. Click on the Edit page.
3. Under Editing Options, make sure the Overtype Mode checkbox is clear.
4. Click OK.

You need to press the insert key on the keyboard. In regular keyboards, insert key shows up next to Home/Delete etc. keys.
That should solve your problem. Good Luck

You probably can see the OVR in black at the bottom. That is overwrite. Hit the insert key and it should be greyed out and your problem solved.
