Too late!
The reservations for the state beaches went on sale back on Nov 1. EVERYBODY wants to get out of LA for the Holiday weekend, and you have to book early. You could check www.reserveamerica.com to see if there are any sites available in the area. Tent sites generally cost $15-$20 per night.
You can also try some of the campsites in the Big Bear area: http://www.bigbear.us/campingf.html
There are some Federal campgrounds in the Santa Ynez Valley that are beautiful, which might not be booked. They are also on reserveamerica.com.
Good luck!

You should camp around Mt. Baldy near Claremont. It offers spectacular views of the mountains and the high country. It's one of the best place to camp that is close, (less than an hour from), to LA. And now, it's probably a good time to go since it's springtime. Camping there only requires a free permit which you can pick up at the visitor center.
If you willing to drive more than an hour, I would recommend Joshua Tree. I camped at the Black Rock Campground, very scenic.

I would say got up to the top of the San Bernandino mts. u can stop at the ranger station and get a permit and I promise you when u get to the top of the mt. u will be in awe of it and camping I think is free. If you get there a little early u can secure one of the beautifulest campsites u have ever seen u overlook LA and the Ojai valley truly a site to behold u can watch the beautiful fog roll in I have camped all over the world and this is my favorite place. Have fun

If you don't mind driving a bit, Joshua Tree is a mind-blowing camping experience. You won't believe the stars at night! Might be too late though- check out their website:

Leo Carilla, there are also some nice places in Santa Barbara if you want to go a little further north, but there are a lot of places off of PCH (pacific coast highway)

head east on 10. How about the isolated and very beautiful High Desert. Try Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree. Night time is amazing and it is so quiet and relaxing.....Try Rancho Mojave.com. I stayed there and it was great....
