The pope basically insulted the ENTIRE indigenous population of Brazil today. His comments indicated that native peoples were 'longing' for Christianity when conquistadores arrived in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Brazilian native (and Church) authorities say the opposite--that the invasion of what is now Brazil by the Spaniards and others from Europe brought famine, disease, enslavement and genocide--all promoted and supported by the Church. What do YOU think? Is he way off base? Out of line? Ridiculous and shouldn't be allowed out?

To Stony: You're correct, the pope has not even apologized for the pedophile trauma. A few months ago he was criticizing Muslims of the fourteenth century! The man and his followers are totally out of sync with reality!

To katiescarlett: Your tone is rather threatening. Do you plan to follow your leader blindly? Do you realize there have been many bad popes?

Hasn't the catholic church caused enough bloodshed in the world? I think Brazil should have nothing to do with the catholic church. Their teaching is archaic, and will only drag the country backwards, and it will do absolutely nothing for women but crush them farther down. They have to put up with enough male violence already, they don't need religion to attack them further. Does anyone believe anymore, that Jesus Christ will return to marry the Pope? That is sick sick sick. Give the Pope the boot. Africa should do the same.

He also plans to put something in the liturgy about converting the Jews. The previous pope removed the reference to "perfidious Jews." Such a nice guy!

Quoted from BBC News:
Religious commentators predict that Pope Benedict will issue authorisation for wider use of the Mass - known as the Tridentine Mass - soon. It is thought that publishers in Rome are already preparing new editions of the Latin missal. The problem, however, is that traditional texts include prayers for the conversion of Jews.

The Tridentine Mass was celebrated for hundreds of years before being replaced by a liturgy celebrated in local languages, as part of reforms instigated after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s.

The old wording has none of the Vatican Council thinking that reversed long-standing anti-Jewish views in the Church. Vatican II brought about a revolution in Catholic thinking, highlighting the ancient Jewish roots of Christianity and affirming God's love for the Jews.

Concern by some groups is now focused on the Good Friday liturgy according to the Tridentine missal, which contains a prayer "For the conversion of the Jews". It is true that this only refers to one prayer that is said on one day of the year.

The prayer reads: "Let us pray also for the Jews, that the Lord our God may take the veil from their hearts and that they also may acknowledge our Lord Jesus Christ."

It refers to their "blindness" and prays for them to be "delivered from their darkness."

LOL, Brazil has never beeing invaded by "Spaniards", Brazil was a colony of Portugal. I don't want to discuss what Europeans caused to the natives, but I find funny how people consider politically incorrect to say that it was a good thing the conversion of Indians. As if Europeans were never pagans... The Europeans were pagans in the past and were converted as well.

Like somebody said above, the Pope did not praise the conduct of the conquistadors. I support the Pope, and if you don't, you don't have to attend a mass or say Hail Mary's, so why don't you be quiet, because your not going to deter the faithful Catholics out there.

I agree, it's insulting. I suppose the Native Americans in North America were longing for the Europeans to come and take their land, too.

It's nice to see the Catholic Church show its true colors from time to time. The last time we got to see them on display was in their protecting of child-molesting priests a few years back.

If I had a dime every time I read something ridiculous from the Blessed, I'd be richer than Pat Robertson.

His comments did not praise the conduct of the conquistadors, he just said that the people longed for Christ. The quote has been horribly misrepresented.

As a Brazilian I just thank God they came, k yeah so my ancestors suffered (well they were mostly African and whites) but if it wasn't for them we'd still be uncivilized pagans (no of fence to my fellow Amerindians).
