I am an American, and I am immigrating to Canada because I married a Canadian, and after weighing the pro's and con's of each country, decided we wanted to live in Canada.
The following reasons are partly why:
1) National Health Care
2) Smaller population
3) Gun Control and lower Crime
4) Difficulty in U.S. Immigration (for hubby)

Well, there could be a lot of good reasons why people immigrate to Canada. A few of the key ones would be:
1/ Canada is a clean, very safe country that has low unemployment in many areas.
2/ Canada has an excellent health care program.
3/ Canada is extremely open to multi-culturalism, and cities like Toronto and Vancouver have extremely active, vibrant ethinic communities.
4/ Canada has an excellent reputation around the world as being a friendly nation that offers fantastic opportunities to anyone who lives there. Like the USA, Canada is a free country that allows people to make the most out of their lives if they are willing to work for it.
Those are just a few of the reasons that someone might look at when coming to Canada. Of course, there are many others, but hopefully this will help to get you started!

I don't know why other people emigrated to Canada, but I can tell you why I came here!
In the 1970's the economy of England was not good and my husband and I were both working full-time jobs and we still could hardly make ends meet.
We decided to move to Canada because the job prospects were excellent, the standard of living was good, we knew that our children would have a better life here, we liked the wide choice of where we could live and I liked the political system (unlike South Africa which had Apartheid)
We had considered and rejected New Zealand (too far) and Australia (too hot and too far), and we thought that Canadians had a good image world-wide.
I think though, that the reasons for people to emigrate to Canada, or any other country, are many and varied - some people leave their country of origin because of persecution, others move to be closer to family members who moved to Canada first.
You can read more about when I came to Canada at http://www.discover-southern-ontario.com/about-us.html
Good Luck with your project!

It is the 24th time Canada has won the World Hockey Championships. Raptors win! Raptors win! Raptors win! The only non-american NBA Basketball team to win the Atlantic Division Title. Vancouver 2010. The Winter Olympic Games. The Ottawa Senators might win the Stanley Cup. Well, I thought you would like something different.**

There was a HUGE (documented, by government webpage views) surge in Americans trying to apply to immigrate to Canada after GWB was reelected. You do the math. ;)
