How do you ask a guy to go out with you to the dance?

I would go about it kind of in a subtle manner. Ask him if he has any plans, ask him if he would go who would he go with, all the while trying to get a feel for if he wants to go. Then when you feel you are both on the same page about it, just kind of ask him. The worse that he could say is no.
