The golden balls that top flagpoles are properly (and obscurely) styled "finials" but have also come to be known on military bases as "trucks." According to www.military-net.com, the ball on top is called a TRUK it represents the shot fired 19th April 1775 fired at Lexington Mass.

Dennis F:

The truk is the ball at the top of the flagpole. It contains a razor blade, 1 45mm bullet, and matches.

The razor blade is to separate the stars from the stripes then burn the flag. Since you cannot burn the flag as a whole. This is done by the Commanding Officer when a post is taken over by the enemy. Once the commanding officer finishes this ceremony, he is supposed to use the 45mm bullet for himself, so that he will not be captured and tortured for information.

I don't know why it's called a truk though.

A true truck, as would be on base flagpole. Would contain: an Eagle feather to represent freedom, A bullet for defense, A grain of wheat so you will not go hungry, and a Match to burn your secrets and for warmth.
