If I've ever lied, that makes me a liar. So if I've ever given away a dollar, am I therefore a philanthropist?

You have to regularly lie to be a liar.

One dollar isn't enough to make you a philanthropist. The point of being a philanthropist is to make a difference. A dollar doesn't really do that. I supposed there can be other ways of giving rather than only giving money, like volunteering your time.

Are you sure that's what they meant? You know that's not true. You're only these things if that is your intention. Otherwise you're a human being who has unpredictable behavior. They must not study psychology. Instead they focus on the fact that people don't always do what they intend to do.

1) A lie to help another, done without expectation of personal gain, and in all appropriateness is the highest charity.

2) A lie done to help another, but with expectation of reward, and given in all appropriateness is done by a person acting out of passion.

3) A lie done for one's own selfish benifit, done with the expectation of destroying out of envy and hate, totally inappropriately, and done to benifit the false pridefull ego is carried out by a person who is illusioned and acting out of ignorance.

Replace the word lie with charity in all 3 examples and that gives you your choices as how to behave. This is my opinion.
