My bf and I had nacho's for dinner the other day - we had left overs and he fed them to his and my dog. I told him not to feed it to my dog because its not good.
He was also feeding his dog lollies (snakes) I told him not to give anymore to my dog, he still did.
Also his dog will eat dinner, then will eat the left overs of what he and I don't eat no matter what it is, lasagna etc. His dog is unhealthy and obese - I dont want my dog to be like that.
My mum wanted to give my dog pizza and I told her not too. She will most likely still do it anyways.
Is food like this really bad for a dog or am I over reacting. Even if its not bad for dogs - if I say I dont want my dog eating it shouldn't people listen.

First, you're not over-reacting. Dogs (& cats) require different nutritional values in their food, & some "human" foods can be bad for them as well as fatal. (I was awed when someone asked about feeding chocolate to a cat! That would be FATAL.) as for supervision over what is fed to your dog, that's pretty much your move. If the people who don't respect your wishes come over, you could put your dog in another room (poor doggie!) or, as I do--anyone who doesn't respect, whether they agree or not isn't worth diddly--they aren't welcome in my home. Period. If they don't respect me regarding my cat, 99% of the time, they don't respect anything else. Maybe you need to get more tough with you bf & your mum? Can they be so insensitve they don't "care" how you feel? Perhaps there are times when you can't be 100% vigilant, but they need to KNOW you mean what you say. I just had a silly -- mean thought! Don't allow people food in your house! EVER. See if that brings them around.
Edit: Someone said not to give your dog dry food, this is incorrect. They need both moist & dry. You can leave a sensible portion of dry out during the day (dogs will eat forever if allowed!) & when it's gone, it's gone. "Serve" moist food at supper. But you probably already know this.

Feeding your dog people food is very bad for dogs. It can cause immediate problems such as pancrititus which can kill your dog or cause long term medical problems starting with obesity, bad teeth, bad skin, watery eyes, hot spots, biting at the paws, low immunity, diabetes, Cronin's disease, plus the bad behavior this creates such as always hanging around and begging during your eating times, do I need to go on? Get your dog on a good commercial dog food, not Kibbles and Bits or O'Roy, and feed on a schedule do not allow anyone to feed your dog outside of this feed schedule and never again give the dog people food such as pizza.

It will make her fat most likely which can lead to problems later. And yes, they should listen. Luckily, my father will respect my wishes when I ask him not to feed my dog. I let my dad feed my dog things sometimes (maybe a little extra bacon if no one else wants it), but my dad always asks me, and I usually tell him no. Maybe you could come up with a compromise with your boyfriend and your mom. You may need to sit down and have a serious talk with them. Ask them to ask you if they can feed your dog. Let them feed your dog twice a week or something, but only when you ask. I personally would not have a boyfriend that disrespected my wishes, but that's just me.
I think dogs can have some leftovers but not EVERYTHING that you don't eat. It's simply not healthy. And, your dog most likely will eventually stop eating his food because he expects other food because human food tastes a lot better.

Aside from the begging and obesity that occurs from feeding your dog people food they can also develop pancreatic problems. My mothers dog has attacks, it will lay on the floor shaking, defecate , vomit and urinate uncontrollably and after a while be okay but, the dog suffers from these attacks and will probably die from them because she used to feed it people food. Yes too much people food is very bad for your dog and tell people to stop it. I cant give you advice on that but I would find a way to put an end to it.

"People food" is not a good idea for dogs. The more and more they eat it= the less time they will live. Also it will make them greedy and always begging. The dry dog food and the canned dog food has plenty of nutrients and if you wnat to give them a little "people food" try a little cheese or something, also you can buy them people food flavored treats they love that.

forcefully tell them NO. Don't be afraid to sound rude but this is your baby that you are talking about. You make the decisions. Last night my bf's grandfather tried giving my chi some chocolate pie. I told him NO. The weird thing is .that he didn't know that chocolate was bad for dogs. If people just don't listen to you then i would suggest putting your dog in another room while their eating.

People should definately listen to your wishes concerncing your pet. If they don't, you may have to find someone else to help pet-sit.
I can't say whether human food is okay or not but I can tell you a little boiled chicken and pasta w/ vitamins sprinkled on it is what my SIL has to feed her dog, so I know they can eat that.
I say, stick with a good quality pet food and you'll most likely NOT have a lazy, obese baby.
Good luck!

The vet told me I could give my puppy small amounts of people food as snacks, but to keep dog food the main part of her diet. She ate chicken livers, steak, small amounts of pasta, etc. When I say small I am only talking about approx. one ounce of any food other than dog food.
