The +P designation means that the ammunition was loaded to higher pressure standards than standard .38 SPL loading. Sort of like turbo-charging an engine.
As someone said, whether this ammo is safe in your Chief's Special or not depends on the age of the gun.
If there is a pin through the front of the frame just above the barrel (actually through the barrel shank), I'd not use the +P ammo for general shooting. At most, I'd shoot one or two cylinders full of the +P ammo and save the rest for defensive use.
Even if you shoot the whole box in one range session, I don't believe there would e much danger of firearms failure. However, extensive use of +P ammo can lead to accelerated wear and possible parts breakage.
If there is no pin through the barrel shank, go ahead and shoot the +P stuff. the only drawback will be greater recoil.

Bound's hubby here:
It actually depends on the "vintage" of your Chief's Special. The +P ammo was introduced in the 1970s if I remember correctly, and S&W issued a warning about use of the +P ammo in their J-frames. Around 1980, S&W approved their current production Model 36s and Model 60s for use with +P ammo. I guess it was some point in the 1990s that +P ammo was no longer an issue in the Model 36/60 when they started manufacturing these revolvers for use with the .357 Magnum cartridge. It would probably be best to contact S&W with your revolver's serial number for their recommendations for your specific revolver.
Good luck!
