My daughter has a bump about the size of a quarter on the top of her foot. It is hard and she says her foot hurts. We had it x-rayed last night and the doctor didn't know what it was and referred her to an orthopedic doctor. Has anyone had anything like this? Any ideas what it could be? She is athletic, but she hasn't hurt herself that we can recall.

Foot bumps are boney projections that can occur anywhere on the foot. They can be a natural enlargement of a foot bone, or they can be an extra bone. They can be asymptomatic (without pain) or symptomatic (painful). If they are not painful, they can usually be accommodated by shoe gear. Painful foot bumps can be treated by the foot and ankle surgeon using a variety of conservative treatments. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.

I recommend your daughter see a Podiatrist, as they are foot specialists. I don't know what your daughter has, but I know that a good foot specialist is the best doctor for this kind of problem.
