Cutaneous calcium deposits in normal people tend to be very small - 1-2mm and hard, not usually tender. They don't make problems and surgery to remove causes more problems than it solves.
Larger, often tender, lumps are frequently sebaceous cysts. Blocked oil glands that enlarge, often with bacteria trapped that cause inflammation. These need to be checked by a doctor - antibiotics and possible excision is necessary.
Lipomas - benign fatty tumors - are soft, usually nontender, and can be anything from 1/2" and larger when they're noticed. They are benign, but most people don't like the lump at some point in its growth and surgery can remove them.
