I'll be honest. Althought I'm a girl, I'm probably not far from the truth. I'd rather have money than a gift card or a present.
(unless that person really knows what they're doing. ^^)
This way if I'm saving up for something, or I just want to pick something on my own, I can.

I think ipod mini's are around $150 right now. If he doesn't have one, I can't imagine any kid not wanting one. I actually think money, delivered in a classy way, is a really good gift for a kid. It makes them feel grown up and empowered when they get to an age where people are giving them a decent sum of cash. at that age, they're often saving up for something big, and a nice contribution towards whatever that is is often very appreciated.

I would recommend getting him an iPod or MP3 player. Or, better yet, you can sometimes find some cheap iBook G4s on Ebay. A laptop might work well.

a video game....or like something to do with sports...or MONEY....they always like that. You could also give them a gift card to one of their favorite stores...if they wear preppy clothes...(hollister, abercrombie, AE, etc.)
