I was given the knowledge of the anipi, handed down to me from a medicine man. The only problem is that he says to use dogwood, and there is no dogwood around. I have seen other traditions use willow branches. My question is can I use another type of wood even though tradition calls for dogwood? I would have to drive nearly 1000 miles to get it.

hopefully you won't mind that I answer this question, even though I was not given the knowledge of the anipi, but if you respect the man who handed this down to you, I'd travel the 1000 miles. He is likely aware that you'd have to do so when he told you that you'd have to use dogwood. any chance to travel for such a purpose is always worthy and it often serves as it's own reward for the experience and knowledge gained when one ventures out of their comfort zone.
