The only disadvantage of neutering is that it does tend to slow down the metabolism, making an animal more prone to overweight. I'd be astonised if this effect had kicked in after a measly week tho, plus it doesn't usually involve extra eating, just weight gain.

If you're worried about your cat, by all means phone the vet. However, as long as the cat has normal poo, is drinking and weeing fine and seems otherwise normal I wouldn't be worried. He is fleaed and wormed regularly, right? A heavy worm burden can cause excessive eating, but its usually accompanied by diarrhoea.

Weight gain in neutered cats can be controlled simply by feeding a high quality food (that is, not stuff available in supermarkets) at the recommended amount and no more. Hills Pet Foods have even developed a food specifically for neutered cats to tackle this very problem.

I know that cat's metabolism will slow down after they are neutered. They lose the hormones that help them burn off the food.
My cat seem traumatized by the neuter experience - he was frantic being with the vet/tech all day. That was the only time his food bowl was left empty.
Also, he kept scourging for food after I brought him home. He kept checking his food bowl for a while afterward. Now, months later, he still expects to fed in the morning - even if he hasnt finished what food I've given him. Maybe its a little psychological? My vet has told me that cats are very sensitive psychologically.

As long as you don't feed him more than the recommended amount on the cat food package, it should be fine. Once a cat gets neutered, it usually takes a few months for him to get lazy and eating is part of that. If he displays any other strange behavior, go ahead and call your vet.

Hospitalization, time away from home, medications can cause extensive stress. His eating will probably level off in a week or two.
