Get a carbine. It will fit a 12 year old, and you can use it, too. Google Ruger Firearms. They have some good carbines. Any of the calibers that Ruger offers in centerfire for their 'range rifles' will take a whitetail down. I was shooting my Dad's Ruger .44 when I was 12. The recoil is not that bad with the semi-auto action. I think your 12 year old should be able to shoot it fine.

Its still a simple fact that the .243 Winchester is the most comon used rifle for hunting anywhere south of S.C on the east coast.

The .270 is close second, but the 30.06 is to much gun for such small game. If you want something your son can shoot also without developing a flinch, I highly recommend the .243 caliber. I own many different calibers including the 30.06, 270 & the .243 and I can tell you the 30.06 has been fired less than all of them for many reasons including, no difference in damage to target than the 270 or 243, and the 270 & 30.06 has much more kick than the 243.

The 308 & 243 use the same casing just necked down for the 243. The 308 still kicks harder than the 243 naturally because of bullet wieght, but not enough to cause issues with you or your sons shooting in the future. The biggest mistake you can make is getting to much gun. It will make you a terrible shot.

Good Luck & Happy Shooting

I'd recomend a Marlin 30-30 or 35 cal. They have taken more deer than any other. They do not have very much recoil at all. You should limit your shots to under 100 yards which is plenty far enough in most hunting situations.

My personal preference is a bolt action in .308 w/ 180 grain bullets, I have shot allot of deer w/ allot of different calibers. The .308 is Just right.

I also hunt w/ a Remington 700 in 30-06 w/165 grain bullets. This gun/load is too fast for shots under 75 yards, the bullet just zips through & the deer run father. I use it for large field hunting where I'll be shooting 200 & 300 Yards.

Most Deer are shot at 50 yards & less.

A .30-06 is especially lots now the classic deer high quality. Used to and nevertheless in many things the .30-30 reigns ultimate. I choose a .243. additionally sturdy is the .308. some people choose the .260, .270, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5x55, .257 something or different, 7mm Rem magazine, or maybe the .3 hundred Win magazine. around right here the .243, .308, and .30-06 ammo all value the comparable and are customary. The .30-30 is often shot in a lever action with open factors of interest and is barely sturdy out to approximately 150 yds.

The Most common, i would say is the Model 94 Winchester in 30-30,the caliber has been around for over a hundred years,as has the 30-06 Springfield. My first deer rifle was a 94,its short light, simple to use, ballistics are poor and the round is slow, yeah its killed more deer than any other caliber but like i said, its been around for a long time.Deer are small down south so a .243 win or .260 rem will be fine unless you are taking very long shots 400+ yards or so.if you plan on taking long pokes at deer then you need magnum power,i don't care what any one says i will put my .300 WIN MAG against any .270 or .280 or '06 even 7mm Mag,any day and shoot their bullets out of the air.But hey that's how us Yankees do up here in the mountains.good luck finding JR a rifle.

Get the young fellow a Marlin Model 336 in .30-30 WCF. Cut the stock to fit him and have a recoil pad fitted.

If the young fellow has good eyes, have a receiver sight, a Williams M-66 would be a good choice, installed. If he doesn't have good eyes, mount a fixed 4 power scope.

That might not be the latest word in fancy rifles chambered for the latest ultrashortsupermagnumeargesplitten-loudengoboomer bolt action with a 9-200x1000mm scope, but it is a rifle cartridgee combo that has been THE DEER RIFLE for over 100 years.

Probably a wide assortment of Mauser based 30-06 rifles. I would get him one of those and make sure its a very common model so you can get him a cheap used stock to cut down. Buy some of that reduced recoil ammunition and he will be set. Then when he gets older you can just put the original stock back on and save all the money you would spend on a youth gun that he would outgrow. Not to mention 30-06 is one of if not the most reasonably priced full power rifle cartridges (other than 7.62x54R).
